Vans RV-9A

A two seat Van’s RV-9A kit plane like this one crashed in Oregon, killing the pilot. (This is not the plane that crashed.)

A pilot was killed when his small plane crashed in northwest Oregon early Friday afternoon, federal and state officials said.

The two-seat RV-9A aircraft (N70720) crashed around 1.40 p.m. local time along Highway 213, in a field between Carus Road and Kirk Road, south of Oregon City, a city in Clackamas County.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Oregon State Police confirmed the sole person on board had been killed in the crash.

FAA spokesman Mike Fergus said the aircraft clipped some power lines and crashed as a result. The aircraft was destroyed in a resulting fire, he added.

Federal records showed the 2003-build aircraft was build by and registered to Robert L. Clark of Portland. It was not immediately clear if he was the person flying the aircraft.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will investigate the cause of the crash.
