KJFK 4-10-12 [close up] [IMAGE HEAVY]

I was at Costco and the mounds for a while this afternoon with Dennis today. I then drove him to T5 for his flight, where I then roamed the airport for a while. Near the TSA building by runway 22R, I noticed that an entire family was gathered along the fence watching the planes. I joined them and watched as A340s and 777s taxied by about 10 feet from us. It. Was. Epic. Even got a friendly hello from a PANYNJ officer who said I was ok to be there.

Dennis was very excited abou this bird, still not sure why. I just like to rub it in that I got the beacon.

Blue 100. I was once on this one from BUF --> JFK

I've been joking with Dennis for a while that THIS was the plane I was out to find. Canyon Blue, the A320 involved in the LAX twisted gear incident back in 2005.

Ha! Only [you] guys can get away hanging out by the fence near 22R! I would have been tackled, shackled, hog-tied, and thrown in the can for questioning. Terrific set!!

Ok. that spot is not new. It was very popular in the late 90's early 2000's. not so much now. I used to sit there for hours. maybe they are changing their tune on that spot. Sometimes I just sit there and watch. I also tend to see a lot of people just watching from that location.

Thank you! Had it not been for that entire family standing there, I wouldn't have even tried it! On the way home, I even saw the same family parked under 22L along Rockaway Turnpike. That, I will not do.

I was very surprised with the completely correct answer the PANYNJ office gave me. When I asked if I could photograph there, he said "there's technically no rule against it, just be smart about it and don't shoot what you aren't supposed to." I was ready to be shooed off, but he gave me the actual, correct, legal answer. Bravo!

Interesting. If I remember correctly that's the same spot the PAPD confronted me at back in '97. Glad you were able to hang out there

Just to clear things up, here is the exact location I found the family watching the planes at.

I am still shocked that the officer correctly let me stay there.

In 97 you were confronted. I doubt it for that spot. I use to go there all the time, lots of people would hang out there on summer evenings. And on very hot summer days the Airport Fire department would come by and spray us down. It was great.

This was before there was a 'TSA' building. Now that I see the exact location, it looks like I was about 200ft north but on that same road. I was not on the wrong side of any fence or anything but they made a huge deal about it because TWA had crashed not too long before that. I took this right before they drove up:
