SLR Videos (Learning thread)

I am new to video on my 7d, I would love to see more videos of technique and settings for effect. I would love to know why setting were used. I need help to get better. Any info would be appreciated.

Here is an LGA Maddog I shot on approach today at 1080p video that I did at 30FPS. I shot it at 1/60th of a second. I shot this at 300mm with my Tammy 70-300 VC with VC mode on.

I shot it at 60th of a second to get the "movie feel"

Here is another video

Shot at 720p 60FPS 1/60th of a second so I could slow it down to be very slow. It was with my Tammy 28-75MM and it was on a tripod. (it seems anything hand held comes out like crap)

This was in Paul's T6 Wed of airshow week at 1080p 30FPS at 1/60th of a second with my 6.5MM



The 7D, 60D, T1i, T2i, T3i all do video on the Canon Side... I do not know what models on the Nikon side do but I am looking for any input. What do you guys think, how can I improve?

Sorry that I can't offer any input for technique as I have never attempted to shoot video on mine. I just wanted to say that was one hell of a landing on that AA maddog.

Here is another one of me right in front of Fifi for an engine Startup with a 6.5mm taken at 1080P 30FPS 1/60 of a second (not only for movie mode but the props blur nice at 1/60th)

Even though this isn't advice on videotaping, you can use these tags in your youtube videos to fix the black bars on the side without having to do it in a video editing program.

I just bought the Nikon D5100 and it has HD Video. Only used it once to capture my neighbor being an idiot. I should get some practice when I go to Alaska in a week and a half.

Only a couple of tips from me...

--Keep in mind the Rolling Shutter on most if not all CMOS cameras... each frame is derived from a scan top to bottom, but not each frame as a single image like a classic camera. So, keep the CAMERA movements to an absolute minimum!

--For TRUE slow motion, you will shoot OVER-cranked and then INTERPRET the video in Adobe Premiere at 30fps if shot at 60fps. There is a little more work involved if you also want to keep the sound synced but, for all intents and purposes, shooting 60p or 120p and then interpreting it at 30p will give you the best and most realistic slow mo :-) Slowing down 30p or less will yield poor quality slowmo...

--Do 24p either natively or after you convert to 30p if shot at 60p. Pulldown works best if done from 30p , which is actually 29.97fps, why? Well, if you know TV from the original days, it was 30fps (half the Electrical system cycle, since there were no timing circuits they could use back then) but then color TVs came out and the frame rate had to be reduced by .3 fps to make the color signal and frame sync out of phase in order for it to show up properly. Gotta love analog circuits :-)

--Get an external mic and put a wind sock on it... you will love the improvement.

Creatively, you should start considering music tracks.. makes your videos so much more enjoyable. And Wings ONE seems to me to be the current champ around here... his videos are really nicely done/post produced...

I have to start at some point. At this time, the best in Nikon is the new D7000 with 1080p.

The D90 started the trend and then the D300s and D3s added video... that's it in the PRO lineup... other cameras like D5100, D3100 and lowe models all have 1080p now.

What we expect from Nikon is RAW video... currently they all compress into either Motion JPEG (ugh) or best into H.264 AVCHD or similar MPEG-4 Part 10 formats... I would kill for a 4K RAW video output dSLR. They are coming :-)

Believe it or not, the D3s has the best Low Light performance of any camera out today.. not surprisingly. But the quality of the recordings are very poor... Canon is currently the leader in the final output video. The 5DMkII is the class leader. If you want to do Green Screen, go Canon as Nikon SUCKS for green-screen applications!
