    iPad App Review (Photographers Apps)

Here is a thread of iPad apps reviewed. I ask that others post reviews of their favorite apps. I will have many apps to review and it will take some time to go thru them all. The DSLR Bot and DSLR PRO are going to be reposts from other threads as they are done somewhat well... I hope to have at least 4 new reviews each week. Please Join me and post your own in depth reviews.

    DSLR BOT

    FINALLY!
Bracket for HDR or time lapse or remote trigger from iPhone or iPad!!! Works with infrared remote capable cameras LIKE MY 7D!! (HAPPY DANCE)

This is not teathered to your pc like DSLR PRO, NO PC NEEDED! Just ordered the IR headphone jack and plan on making one today as well for $3.00! AWESOME!!!!

    DSLR Remote

I should have posted some more info on this awesome App

(YOU HAVE TO TEATHER YOUR CAMERA TO YOUR PC) and your iPhone or iTouch can control your camera with NO WIRES!

Good for studio work where you camera is on a tripod....go to the subject and move there hand and snap....move their head
and snap...then show them the shots right on the iphone without moving out of frame.

Edit all settings and bracket, time lapse and MUCH MORE. Edit ISO, Aperture, Shutter speed...Change your white balance on the fly too! This is soo great. Here are some of the screens

    LIVE VIEW

The setup...camera teathered to pc but iPhone wirelessly controls thru the pc

    Remotely shots this

9 shot HDR taken from iPhone and edited later on pc..

(I know the HDR was not needed, but when do I ever need a reason to do a HDR?)

Shown is the iPhone App but it is much nicer on the bigger iPad version.

    The Photographer's Ephemeris

This is a great way to position yourself for a long distance shot of an object and predict where the moon or sun will rise or set. I posted a few screen shots to show how it uses the map to draw lines to show the direction of sunrise/sunset.

Here zoomed out you can see the position that I decided to be in that intersects the moon rise..... I changed the day on the right for about 5 days until the moon behind the lighthouse converged with the parking lot I wanted to be in for the long distance shot (I wanted the moon to be big!)

    close up view of lighthouse

    even closer

closeup of where I want to be...

Here is a VIDEO I made of this mornings adventure

Here was the shot that I took this morning at 4:10am

Here is a better shot when I was not concerned about a moon shot and was only worried about quality...different day

    Air Display
Use your iPad as a second monitor without cables...uses the router
your pc and iPad are connected with. (Touchscreen still works!)

    This app has it all!

I am worthless when it comes to flash, this makes me a pro...One shot and no do overs with mutible flashes off camera setup
    with no ETTL!

Until DSLR's have a Geotag, I can use this for now to take a snapshot with my iPhone or I can take a picture
with my camera of the screen. I usually just press both iPhone buttons at the same time for a screenshot
then I use another app called Smugshot to upload to my smugmug or type it in if needed.

    Timer?

I usually use the iPhone timer app but this works very well too!

Love the night, and make you night easier with this app. I have no Idea how much it was as I
jailbroke my phone and downloaded it for free. After a quick few days I realized how much it was
worth and did not care if it was $.99 cents or $10, I deleted the app and ordered it from the app
store. It is one of those things where if I like it I support the person making it. I feel the same
way about this app, $.99 or $50, I love Smugwallet and if you are thinking of purchasing it, do
not think.... Just do it as you will NEVER regret it!
(FYI - I do not know the people who wrote this and do not work for the company nor have I ever spoke
with them other than when I needed help one time a LONG time ago by email)

The video recorder on the iPad makes all these videos run slow, actual
    ipad use is much faster.

    StroBox

It allows you to make a lighting diagram to show how a particular image was shot
with multiple lights. Great for explaining how a shot was lit. It is very impressive
if you are using help and a few lights. Quickly show your help what it should look
and you can worry about other things instead of light placement as they will see
    exactly what you want.

if someone asked me how I took this image

I would have made this and emailed it to them

good for many light sources and has a ton of graphics!

Of course my Favorite App once again is
    SmugWallet

(picture above from the iPhone app with all pictures downloaded in lower resolution to
conserve space. This show a few months ago what the total images on my site
www.longislandwallpapers.com was. Now I am up over 27K images in shown
in the iPad video below. Still under 5gig for all those images in 1024x768
    resolution.

OK, Not really a great app for photographers as I like Photoshop on a computer, but I
did feel this was a really good app. For a quickie, this really is a great app. There
are a lot of other apps that do the same thing, this app has a really easy user interface
and lots of different presaved looks. (kind of like an auto edit app)

    Photo Studio HD

Turn you iPad in to a softbox... OK, It seems lame but lets face it, you never have
enough light. With this you can use it as a base with patterns for bottom lit... there
are LOTS of possibilities but I have too many iPad reviews to play.

Camera Kit / FilterStorm app / Smug Shot
Real world field usage from start to finish!

Camera Kit is the USB adapter that allowed me to plug in my Canon 7D and download
the pictures I needed to edit on the spot. Then did a quick edit with FilterStorm and
then sent out via email and Uploaded to SmugMug with Smug shot.

Here was the image that I uploaded...(Not full size) Original image was 10MP taken
    with my Canon 40D.
(I was going for a real life use on the road of a quick edit and upload...speed was
reduced due to recording on the iPad and with an app smugwallet downloading 300pics
it really started to slow down... sorry but I forgot I was running background tasks)

This is a great list of Apps, thanks.

For more than two years I wrote a weekly iPhone App of the Week article, then an iPad App of the Week article ... but time constraints have derailed that in the past few months.

However ... the best apps for photogs I have used are Filterstorm ... and a new Filterstorm Pro should be in the itunes store shortly. I have been using the Beta version of the app for about two months and it is fantastic! Really an awesome App!

For sharing your photos Portfolio is a great professional app for photogs to use. I have used it during corporate presentations when I left my laptop home and its been fantastic!

The GorillaCam App of the iPhone is a lot of fun, best of all is its free and has grid lines, as well as a dozen other great features.

But the top App for me is Filterstorm. I have used it professionally while traveling and transmitting deadline photos repeatedly over the past year and it is unsurpassed in what it offers.

Here is an app called "Marine Traffic" Lets you see some boats. Kind of like Passur or Flight aware for Tugboats, Ferrys, Ships, and cruise liners. It is really neat
    Here are some screen shots

    Click on a boat

    Routes taken so far

    Blowup picture of the boat

Pictures do not do this justice
