The South African Airways Museum Society
Information for local and overseas visitors.

Thank you for your enquiry about our Museum. The following will help when planning your visit. Click on blue links for further information.
The South African Airways Museum Society is based at Rand Airport and makes use of land allocated to them by Rand Airport management. The display hall and library is located in the Transvaal Aviation Club building alongside the static aircraft park. Museum Co-ordinates are -26° 14' 30.23", +28° 9' 33.44"
The Museum owns 11 aircraft, 7 on static display and 4 operational/serviceable. Their locations are as follows:
Casa 352L (Junkers Ju 52/3m) ZS-AFA
Lockheed L1649A Starliner ZS-DVJ
Vickers Viking 1A ZS-DKH
The above aircraft are located at SAA Technical at OR Tambo International Airport and can be visited by special request. Our restoration manager Richard Hunt [email protected] or [email protected] 083 459-7802 (cell) works at SAA and can make arrangements for you to visit. Photography is NOT normally permitted at SAA Technical. It may however be possible to arrange a camera permit. Please apply well in advance to [email protected] and provide full names, contact details and South African Identity Number or Passport number.
The CASA 352L is serviceable and was test flown on 16 April 2009. The aircraft has been out of service for many years now and the Museum is working on putting her back in the air to once again provide nostalgia flights and charter work.
The below mentioned static display aircraft are based at our Rand Airport Museum Facility.

The B747SP is 100% intact as it was when it landed at Rand. The engines and APU are run regularly.
The B747-200 is intact as it was when it landed at Rand. However the engines are not the original ones as at the time of landing, the engines were still a saleable item. The APU is run regularly and the rest of the aircraft all works.
There is a Douglas DC-6 9Q-CGZ in the Museum’s aircraft park, not owned by the museum but stored for the owner.
The Museum owns a GPU (Ground Power Unit) and this is used to “switch on” the two 747s when needed for film shoots, VIPs or sometimes for when we have our monthly meeting. An added attraction for our members.
The below aircraft are the Museum’s three operational aircraft and they are based at Denel Aviation on the eastern side of OR Tambo International Airport. Atlas Road, Bonaero Park, Kempton Park.

The Museum leases the three classic airliners to Skyclass Aviation who operate them on charter work. The entire South African Historic Flight fleet was donated to the SAA Museum Society in late 2007. The fleet consisted of the two DC-4s, the DC-3 and the CASA 352L (Junkers Ju 52/3m). There is a Carvair at Rand owned by Phoebus Apollo Aviation. Also a Catalina under restoration to flying condition in Hangar 5 at Rand.
The taking of photographs at the Museum facilities and at Rand Airport is permitted.
