Anyone Ever Used a Mirror Lens?

I've come across some mirror lenses recently and don't know much about them. They're all manual focus, high fixed magnification (500mm+), low apertures (f/8 or lower), and relatively very affordable ($200 for a used Canon 500mm at B&H).

Has anyone used one? Would they be suitable for spotting?
Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. We have a small problem.
All four engines have stopped. We are doing our damnedest to get them under control.
I trust you are not in too much distress. —Captain Eric Moody, British Airways Flight 9

Never used them but 20 years ago i was tempted to buy one when my Canon AE1P SLR.

Camera mags said they where good but could leave tiny donut marks on the images, now not sure as technology has bound to get better.

I have never used one, but my understanding is that they are manual focus only. Certainly dampens my enthusiasm as far as it being a spotting lens.
