USS George Washington CVN-73 on 4th July

    Gidday all,

Visiting Perth, Western Australia for the 1st time this week was the USS George Washington
CVN-73 which is on 4 days R&R here before sailing on 6.07.09 to Northern Australia to participate in 'Operation Talisman Sabre' a joint excercise between US & Australian & Kiwi
    armed forces.

Here are some photos I took on 4th July 3km off the coast of Fremantle in a Cessna 172.

    Enjoy Greg

Nice shots Greg! Did she come in by herself or with her battle group escorts?

    Thx T-Bird 76,

The carrier dropped anchor 3km off shore of Fremantle a passage of water called Gage Roads,
she was accompanied into Port with only 1 other vessel 'USS Cowpens CG-63' & a SSBN submarine which we believe berthed at nearby HMAS Stirling on Garden Island several km to the south from Fremantle, I suspect that other US Navy vessels may have dropped into other ports down the West Australian coastline such as Geraldton in the state's mid west but not certain. The crew had their 1st sample of Australian hospitality & of those whom I spoke with absoloutely love this country of what they saw of it, particularly our wildlife of Kangaroos & Koala bears native to Australia. Glad you enjoyed the pictures and will post some more soon. Cheers Greg

Hey Greg, cool shots. Are they taken from an office building in Perth? Cool vantage point.

I can totally agree with their impressions of Australia. Can't wait to get back to Perth.

I'll have to ask my friends over in Geraldton to have a look!
And I, I took the path less traveled by
and that has made all the difference......yet...
I have a feeling a handle of people are going to be very interested in what I post in the near future.

My father use to say the same thing about Oz when they had shore leave there, in fact it was his favorite country for stop overs. Hopefully I'll make it there in 2010 or 2011.

    Hi Mirrodie,

The photos were taken from a Cessna 172 hired from Royal Aero Club at nearby Jandakot Airport, Perth city is about 20kms approx from Fremantle. Not from my office unfortunately!

She set sail yesterday afternoon at 14.30hrs (AWST) heading North in preparation for its involvement in Operation Talisman Sabre which commenced 6th July and runs until 26th July.

Ive attached a few more pictures for you guys, this time two pictures of USS Cowpens CG-63 moored in Fremantle Harbour along with P&O Sun Princess and a couple more of CVN-73.

    Cheers Hiflyer
