    LGA - 3/21/09

Went to the LGA Airliner show for a bit this afternoon. Not too many people there (I got there a little after 1pm) although I did see Sergio, and spent some time talking with a couple of the vendors I knew. Afterwards, I headed over the the Worlds Fair Marina for some EV31 approach action. It's been a while since I did much LGA spotting, I got out around 4pm, and the light was wonderful.

There was a lull in the action, and then this AA Mad Dog came blasting off 13 - must have been heavy, he used most of the runway to get airborne.

I also took a ride around Flushing Meadow Park, to see if there were any decent places to shoot from (as well as to take a few pictures around the park.) I found one parking lot, over near the new ice rink. I was in the car, checking the GPS, trying to figure out just where I was and where the arrivals would be coming from (I wasn't hearing anything on the scanner...) I looked up, just as the PSA retro-jet flew past - EPIC FAIL - I still haven't shot that one!

I did finally get a shot of the "new" Spirit scheme - I was over near the Unisphere when I shot this:

NIce shots. One day I have to do LGA
And I, I took the path less traveled by
and that has made all the difference......yet...
I have a feeling a handle of people are going to be very interested in what I post in the near future.

Good shots Moose! I love the one with the old Edo factory in the background.

I've done a bit of Flushign Meadows exploration myself. There are some decent locations, but I found that it was difficult because the planes are a little higher over there than people realize, and some planes turn wider or tighter than others, which will cause you to miss several important ones on occasion. The marina will also be supreme for that reason.

Nice shots Moose, sorry I missed you at the show, left around 1230. I like the tail closeup of 910FR. The US 319 you shot was arriving from STT and the E-190 from FPO. N742PS landed around 1700, did you catch that?

The AA MD80 13 departure was crews request, the wind at that moment slighly favored 13 and as you can tell was a little heavy.

    Cheers

Thanks Ron, sorry I missed you at the show also - I got a bit of a late start to the day. Unfortunately I missed N742PS - I was checking out spots in Flushing Meadow Park, and looked up just as she flew by. When I tossed the scanner on the car seat, it got switched off LGA tower freq, so I thought there was a lull in the action and wasn't watching for her.

well, at least you carry the radio with you and don't leave it taking up space in a flightbag somewhere inacessable...
it is mathematically impossible for either hummingbirds, or helicopters to fly. fortunately, neither are aware of this.

Good stuff, Sergio. In those first few shots, you look very close to the ground. Where were you standing?
