    Yesterday's Storm

I came to LGA to see my friend off at UAL yesterday. Unfortunately, after a several hour wait, his flight was finally cancelled; although the aircraft was de-iced. I had an enjoyable time watching the snow clearing operations. At one point, the visibility seemed to be zero with a less than 1000' ceiling. There were numerous plows and other equipment in use. The de-icing operation, using what ressembles a cherry picker, was also very interesting. As the snow accumulated, I noticed that Rwy 4/22 was closed as all arrivals came in on Rwy 13 instead. Is it normal for LGA to go to a 1-Runway Operation during snow?

it's normal to close a runway that is too contaminated to recover airplanes on. the port had thier hands full trying to keep up with runway cleaning. 4/22 was closed while the port was working to clean it and all traffic was landing and departing 13.
it is mathematically impossible for either hummingbirds, or helicopters to fly. fortunately, neither are aware of this.

Since no one else started a storm thread, let me post a couple of shots here.

Friday, around Noon, in Oyster Bay:

And to keep this aviation related, I stopped by to see an old friend this afternoon:

Most of the snow here has iced over. I actually didn't know that they were down to using 13 at LGA yesterday. I saw a lot of arrivals and departures on 4 yesterday. In fact, I also saw a Delta 757 on approach to runway 4 and then all of a sudden execute a go around. Pretty neat thing to watch when a 757 all of a sudden powers up on approach and pulls up.

Thats a great shot. What a lousy weekend. Snow/sleet Friday, flurries/cold/clouds Saturday, then this morning
woke up to heavy rain. Had to drive up to Old Brookville to pick up my daughter and while the LIE/Rt 107 wasnt bad,
the residential streets in Old Brookville were a mess from the rain and melting snow. Now tonite dropping temps and
winds up to 40MPH. And its only Dec.

Great shots all. Too bad we must endure the icy, slippery roads to get to these places shown. Winter storms look beautiful but are also treacherous! Take care.
