    TWA 800

Yesterday was the sad anniversary of TWA 800 yet there was almost no mention on the various local newscasts. How fast we forget. The only mention was an article saying that the FAA wants to improve fuel tank safety over a 10 year period.

I attended the memorial service at Smith Point Park last night. Several hundred people, mostly family, friends, and former TWA folks were there, and most of the LI media had representatives covering the event. I've been to the memorial a few times, but this was my first time to the services on July 17. It was a low-key event, but very moving.

    Very touching. Great photos, Moose.

I don't understand the "flew west" part. Is that phrase I'm not familiar with? Because Flt. 800 was flying east.

I don't know if it's used widely in the industry, but at least with TWA folks, they use the phrase "flew west" when talking about those who have passed away. I know my father gets (way too many) "Flown West" e-mails from his retiree group. I'm not sure of the origins of the usage, but it may come from this anonymous quote I found:

"To fly west, my friend, is a flight we all must take for a final check."

Some of you guys might remember the picture I drew last year about TWA 800.. Someone corrected me on an error I did but I was unable to fix it. I accidently wrote Boeing 747-123 instead of Boeing 747-131. heres my picture you guys might remember...
