Truly an amazing event in the history of man. Its a bit sad to think that today a shopping mall stands on the same earth where this event took place. I'd bet a years salary that if you asked 10 people in the Roosevelt Field Mall what it was named after and the historical significance of it they wouldn't know... :( Its the pioneering spirit of Americans like Lindbergh that made this a great nation.

Those are photos of the actual Spirit of St. Louis, I shot them in 2005 at the Air & Space Museum in DC.

This is the replica, which is at the Cradle of Aviation Museum. The replica was used to film the Jimmy Stewart movie in 1957:



Back in 1977, to mark the 50th anniversary of Lindbergh's flight, I attended a ceremony at Eisenhower Park, where a number of vintage aircraft, including this replica (if I remember correctly), flew over.

I've seen that one in DC....wasn't sure if it was rthe real one. Not sure why I doubted it.

Wow, amazing to think it was 80 years ago. ANd sadly, yes, as Tom said, I didn't even know there was a monument in front of the parking garage.

Something of that significance should have been placed at the mall entrance or even inside.

Unless they moved it, or there is a second one, the one I remember seeing was inside the mall. First floor, near Macys, I think.

And yes, Mike, it was exciting, standing out on the field that day, watching Lindy take off. I told him to watch for the wires at the end of the field, it would ruin his whole day if he hit them
