And the NIMBY chorus responds.

Officials say new airplace plan would bring too much noise

NEW YORK -- A plan for a new flight pattern in the congested airspace around New York and Philadelphia is drawing criticism from some elected officials, who say the redesign would not do enough to keep planes away from people's homes.

FAA officials said the plan will ease delays, save airlines money and bring desperately needed efficiency to a patchwork airspace map that has been unchanged since the 1960s. But the change will also bring noisy jets over some Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and Connecticut communities for the first time. More...
Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. We have a small problem.
All four engines have stopped. We are doing our damnedest to get them under control.
I trust you are not in too much distress. —Captain Eric Moody, British Airways Flight 9

My family hates the Newark and Morristown traffic over our house, but I love it! I hope this plan doesn't take it away. We get some low 737s and Embraers very regularly...if only I had a good camera to photograph them. But I guess as long as this helps reduce delays at EWR then it's a good thing. I could really care less about NIMBYS in this case. No matter what someone is going to have to deal with air traffic over their neighborhood.
