A few days after being handed the keys to its first Boeing 787 Dreamliner, United Airlines has flown its new state-of-the-art toy home to Houston.

United Flight 7708 took off from Seattle’s Boeing Field at 10:00 am on Friday, and after some skillful storm dodging and a brief bit of circling over Colorado, landed at George Bush Houston Intercontinental Airport about four hours later.

In contrast to some previous events surrounding the milestone first plane, including its emergence from the paint hangar, the delivery earlier in the week and the delivery flight involved little fanfare. Media were invited less than 24 hours before the Seattle departure. The plane was greeted in Houston by a water cannon salute but little else in the way of celebration.

The new jet enters service on a number of routes beginning November 4th.

  • Well United finally got it’s 787 and flew it to Houston where the celebration was minimal. Would anyone think that the Grandstand Play with the City of Houston had anything to do, with the first 787 delivered to an American Airline, by an American aircraft manufacture? You bet it did! United should have made Chicago their point of entry into service, and maybe someone would have passed-out small bags of peanuts.

Why should they have made Chicago their point of entry? The plane will be launched in wintertime, and Houston encounters a lot fewer weather issues from winter storms than Chicago. Why not put the new, expensive plane in the south where it can stay on schedule and help the airline make the payments?

Houston was selected because that is where the 787 program originated with CONTINENTAL AIRLINES. Continental was the first American carrier to order the airplane and has been training crews since before the UAL merger.
