A suspicious package has forced the crew of a United Airlines flight to divert to Boston.

United Airlines Flight 956, a Boeing 767-300ER (N654UA) flying from Newark to Geneva, was just off the coast of Nova Scotia when it turned back toward the United States.

There was an unconfirmed report that NORAD had scrambled fighter jets to intercept the aircraft.

UPDATE: 9:09 PM: Two Massachusetts Air National Guard F-15s were scrambled out of Barnes Air Force Base to escort the flight back to Boston, according to @CS_Intel.

Furthermore, one of the F-15s has declared its own emergency, reporting a total avionics failure, according to @joebrownphotos.

UPDATE 9:25 PM: United 956 landed safely at around 9:20 PM and taxied to a remote area, escorted by law enforcement vehicles.

Boston CBS affiliate WBZ reported that the suspicious device was a camera that had been found in a seatback pocket. Flight attendants were unable to locate its owner.

THIS IS A DEVELOPING STORY. CHECK BACK OFTEN FOR ADDITIONAL DETAILS.

  • Sounds like a huge over-reaction.
