AirTran Airways announced on Wednesday that they will increase their first checked bag fee by $5 starting September 1st., the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.
The fee will increase from the current $15 to $20 and will still be lower than the charges of arch-rival Delta Air Lines. The increase will also affect coach reservations made on August 17 or later.
AirTran, which has its largest hub in Atlanta, Georgia, said that the increase in baggage fees was a consequence of the rising costs of fuel. Many other airlines have already increased its fees.
Delta Air Lines, AirTran’s main competition in Atlanta, currently charges $25 for a first checked bag on domestic flights or a $23 fee if it is paid online.
For a second checked bag, Delta charges $35 or $32 if paid online. AirTran currently charges $25 for a second checked bag.
