Canon's PhotoStitch Utility

I always knew about PhotoStitch, and how it's used to fuse independent photographs into a larger panorama, but I never used it. I always assumed you'd have to do it manually. I opened it today, and a couple samples were included. To my surprise, it fuses photos fully automatically, and the results astonished me.

I decided to try it out with some older pictures, and one of my test subjects was a series of photos of the Vancouver skyline at night. They were taken with my old Fujifilm F10. I know they might not be clear shots, but I was surprised how seamlessly PhotoStitch pieced them together.

Almost looks like it was taken with a fisheye lens. I never meant for these pictures to be fused together, so if you look closely, you may be able to see the split. Still, pretty cool in my book.

The photostitch utility really works great, but for best results (meaning, almost no seam lines) you have to shoot in manual mode with the same f/stop & shutter speed settings. Of course a tripod also helps as well.

Yeah, I didn't have a tripod at that time, so I tried my best to keep it steady. I think it was a 3 second exposure.

You took a 3-second exposure handheld??? :shock:

I just checked the EXIF's. The shutter speeds are 3.25 sec and exposures are 3 sec.

Very nice shots - that night shot is great, especially for being hand-held! I've been playing with panoramas a little bit, using the function in PhotoShop CS3. It's fully automatic, and does a really nice job.
