Small Plane Crashes Into Mississippi House, Killing Three [Updated]

A small plane crashed into a house in Jackson, Mississippi on Tuesday evening.

WLBT reported that the aircraft was a Piper Cherokee that had taken off from Hawkins Field carrying three passengers. It developed engine trouble and was heading back to the airport when it went down near the intersection of Capitol St and Delaware Ave, about 3/4 of a mile from the approach end of Runway 34.

Hawkins Field is a small civilian-military joint-use airport in a western section of Jackson.

Aerial video from the scene of the crash showed a large fire. The condition of the passengers and residents was not immediately known.

UPDATE 11:00 PM ET: The plane was a 1972-built Piper PA-32 Cherokee Six, registration N717RL. It was owned by the Superior Pallet Company based in Flowood, Mississippi. There was still no update on the condition of the passengers or anyone in the damaged house.

UPDATE WEDNESDAY 2:40 PM ET: All three people on the plane were killed: Pilot John Tilton, and passengers WC Young and David Williams. A woman in the house that was hit escaped with minor burns. The NTSB will investigate the cause of the crash.
