Over 1,000 flights to and from northeast airports were cancelled Wednesday as a winter storm approached the northeast’s largest airports.

Newark Liberty International Airport, JFK International Airport, LaGuardia Airport, Philadelphia International Airport and Boston Logan International Airport were among the hardest hit by the cancellations.

The Nor’easter was expected to bring 40-50 mph winds with gusts as high as 70 mph along with snow, sleet and heavy rain.

A storm surge forecast to be as high as 4 feet also had the potential to cause flooding at low lying LaGuardia Airport, which was closed for several days following Hurricane Sandy.

Most airlines issued change and cancellation fee waivers for passengers seeking to change their travel plans.
