An unoccupied sailboat broke free of its mooring in Boston Monday morning, running aground next to Logan Airport‘s runway 9/27 and causing delays as the runway had to be closed, the airport said.
Flights were forced to use Runway 4R for both arrivals and departures, causing arrival delays of an hour or more. Inbound traffic from some cities was being grounded until at least 2:00 PM ET, according to the FAA website.
The 37-foot schooner had been tied up in Winthrop, at least 1/2 mile from the airport on the opposite side of Boston Harbor. High tides and winds were lashing the area overnight and into the morning hours, likely contributing to the incident.
Crews were working to move the vessel as of 1:45 PM ET.
