For just $10,000, you and a loved one, best bud, or trusted traveling companion can fly around the world in 2012, stopping up to 10 times on the way, thanks to a deal offered by Groupon. [see note about this link below.]

The discount coupon site “sometime” on Tuesday will offer two pairs of the tickets on Tuesday only, one economy class set for $10,000, or upgrade to business class for $20,000.

For that price, Delta Air Lines, Air France, Alitalia and KLM will transport you anywhere they fly in North America, Europe and Asia. The price does not include hotels, but Groupon will throw in up to three specially-planned excursions during your minimum three 24 hour layovers, worth up to $500 each.

You can stop up to 10 times, and you must stop in Europe at least once and Asia at least once. You cannot, however, backtrack once you start. For example, once you fly east, you must continue east. This would seem to limit the possibilities of making more than two stops in Asia, since Delta is the only airline in the deal that offers intra-Asia flights, and all of those are to/from its hub in Tokyo, in the easternmost portion of Asia.

$5,000-a-person may not sound cheap when you consider no hotels are provided, but that’s actually not too bad, especially if you make more than the minimum of three layovers. For a quickie comparison run, I tried booking JFK-LHR-AMS-FCO-PEK-NRT-LAX-JFK with January dates through Delta’s website and got a fare of over $20,000. Considering January is one of the slowest and therefore least expensive air travel months of the year, the savings through this deal could be even greater should you book summer travel.

To round out your $10G’s worth, you also get two safari hats and a steamer trunk.

Editor’s Note: The more web-savvy among you might notice this is an affiliate link, and yes, we would get a cut of the sale of this should someone buy one of these Groupons through our link. But this is not a sponsored post. It wasn’t until after we started writing it that we realized it would be easy to earn a few extra bucks should someone somehow decide to click our link to buy it.
