UPDATE 11:05 PM ET: FAA spokesman Allen Kenitzer tells us the incident plane was a Rockwell Turbo Commander 690A (N690SM) which had just departed Falcon Field. The number of passengers onboard and their condition was not known. The NTSB is investigating the crash.

A Safford, Ariz.-based air taxi and aerial firefighting company called Ponderosa Aviation was the registered owner. According to their website, the plane was configured with eight seats. Sadly, the website also noted that they had never suffered a serious accident in their 34 years in business.

The Rockwell Turbo Commander 690A was introduced in the 1960s as part of the Aero Commander series of aircraft. It can carry 6-10 passengers up to 2,300 nm. This particular plane was fitted with eight seats and was built in 1976.
