“Building Blocks” was drawn up by Long Beach-based JetBlue employee Troy Bokosky, who entered an employee tailfin design contest which the airline held in conjunction with its 10th anniversary festivities in January 2010.

“I wanted to design something that worked with our existing tailfins and would look good as a tie with my uniform,” said Bokosky. His squiggly squares tail bested over 300 other designs. Five finalists were chosen from all the entries, which were then put online for the public to pick their favorite which drew a total of over 30,000 votes.

The Airbus A320 named “Blue Kid in Town” (N587JB) previously wore a plaid tail, but was recently repainted at Dean Baldwin Painting in Roswell, New Mexico. Bokosky and his dad, who is also a JetBlue employee, got to ride the ferry flight from Roswell to Long Beach where they were greeted by a party thrown for the unveiling.
