Four people were killed when a small passenger plane carrying six people crashed in the Canadian province of Quebec on Friday morning, authorities said.

A spokeswoman for the Transportation Safety Board of Canada said the de Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver aircraft crashed in a remote area of northern Quebec on Friday morning, but provided few details.

The spokeswoman said two investigators of the Transportation Safety Board of Canada had been sent to the crash site to investigate the cause of the crash.

The plane crashed after the pilot encountered bad weather in the vicinity of Maria-Chapdelaine, a regional county municipality in northeastern Quebec, according to local police. Six people were on board the aircraft.

Hours after the crash, rescue workers recovered four bodies from the scene of the crash. Two other people were flown to a hospital in Chicoutimi where they were reported to be in a critical condition.

Police said the passengers on board the aircraft were most likely family of each, as all five had the same last name.
