An American Airlines 737-800 on approach to LGA hit a bird with its front landing gear Tuesday morning, causing a hydraulic leak, but no injuries. Flight 1256 from Miami, with 140 people on board, hit the bird while descending to runway 22 at approximately 1200 feet. It landed safely but had to be towed to the gate.
The incident comes in the midst of a city operation to round up and kill 2,000 geese in public parks and other open spaces specifically to prevent bird strikes among aircraft traversing the local airports.
