Rwy 31L/13R looks almost completed. Any news about when it will be actually opened?

Unless there's some major unforeseen problem, it will open on July 1st. I was told they might set up some kind of ceremony for the reopening but there's nothing definite yet.

Yesterday, there was a small prop that made quite a few very low passes or touch and goes (I couldn't tell) on 31L. One of the passes caused an American Eagle ERJ to go around.

Yesterday the FAA conducted flight checks for the RWY 31L Localizer and Glideslope. The aircraft was a King Air call sign was Flight check 69. It made several low approaches to RWY 31L.

I have seen him on numerous occasions buzzing the runways...yesterday he delayed the use of the 2nd departure rwy (31L) until he was finished. As noted the project is currently on time and phase 1 will be complete. Phase 2 is to take out the intersection of 22R/4L and 31 L for a couple of weeks.

I have heard that Flight Check aircraft on LiveATC several times before. He usually departs HPN or some airport upstate, flies down, does touch and goes to test the ILS and Localizer equipment, and then departs the area. He was a frequent visitor when runway 4R/22L was widened and could be heard around midnight a few nights a week doing flight checks when the project was nearing completion. Cool to see that they are in the final phases of 31L, it's been a long couple of months!

I was hoping the work on the Bay Runway would be completed ahead of schedule. I was at Coney and saw many aircraft heading into JFK via the Canarsie Approach but they evidently were all landing on Rwy 13L. Mostly all Jet Blues except for an EVA Air B74F and THY 1 also appeared using the CRI Approach. Guess 13R is still closed.

Not official yet, but it very likely will reopen ahead of schedule. Stay tuned.

Finally! I was surprised to see them using 31L-13R today when I returned home from work. Although the lighting wasn't great, I was able to snap a few shots off.

Awesome captures, Mark. It's not often you see European banks from HoBe. I'm digging the Iberia bank!

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines # 9080 Operated by: DELTA AIR LINES -- DL 80 -

And how cool is this? My brother heads off to the World Cup games today on the above flight. Of course, he has a fractional amount of excitement that I would over the new runway.

Aside form Matt's article, does anyone know where more pictures of the construction and current appearance can be found? And which are the new 'high speed' taxiways I've read about?
