I've never been to the Macy*s fireworks display, but when I heard they were going to be held on the Hudson River this year, I decided to head over to Hamilton Park in Weehawken, NJ to catch the action. Expecting a crowd, I got there at 2:30 in the afternoon ( :!: ) I packed a sandwich, water, and some reading material. By showtime, there was a sizable crowd. It was a perfect evening, and an exciting show.
Just before dark, NYPD Aviation came up river with a 4-ship of their helicopters, three Agustas (315, 318, 319) and the Bell, N412PD.
As the last of the fireworks were shot, one of the fireworks barges caught fire. The fireboats hung back for a few minutes, and for good reason - not all the fireworks had fired, and after several went off onboard the barge, a fireboat came in and extinguished the flames.
