AA Baggage System Down at JFK

WCBS radio is reporting the baggage system at AA's JFK terminal is down. Passengers are being given the option of traveling without their checked luggage (which will follow when the system is restored) or switching to a later flight. Reportedly lines are long, bags are piling up, and AA wasn't making announcements, but rather waiting to tell people when they finally arrived at the check-in counter. Stay tuned...

Not a good way to sell your checked bag fees now is it American?

Whoa, definitely curious as to how this will pan out especially with baggage fees. I wonder what causes a baggage system to completely fail like this...

How does this have anything to do with the baggage fee????? It doesn't the system is down which blows but has nothing to do with a baggage fee or if it will be waived.

Getting baggage at AA's JFK terminal is the one downside to the terminal. You can wait an hour easy during busy times for your bag. It’s the one thing AA really needs to improve.

So Tommy, why should a customer have to pay $15 to check a bag (or more for 2+) when it is a known fact that due to operational reasons (read: AA's fault) that the bag will not be traveling with the passenger and will not be arriving at the destination(s) until a much later time?

Keep in mind, the baggage fee may be intended to off-set the fuel expenses of the added weight of the bags, but it is not a "fuel surcharge" per say and is not documented as such. I would interpret this as passengers should NOT be required to pay the fee if AA has an operational glitch of this magnitude. Of course, the way things should work is rarely the way they actually work...

Because they are making the choice to still check a bag. The bag is still being transported one way or another. Yes it would be good customer service to waive the fee but from a purely black and white viewpoint the bag is still being checked and that would mean the fee would stand.

The real issue is the delay in the bag. How many people have cloths they may need for lets say a wedding they are attending, a meeting, event...or w/e else. More then likely AA will throw some miles at the Elites to keep them quiet.

Acutally no. In most cases, the choice in made by the airline, GA, those who monitor what you can/ cannot bring onboard.

I think AA should waive their fees. Its called goodwill. They have nothing else really going for them.

    But.... look at this...

You know that AA's money counters are looking at all the luggage and fees like a dog drolling over a bone.

Of course, now that AA will have to blow money $$ and time to deliver those bags to hotels and homes, you can kiss that revenue goodbye.

Just heard on NBC news that AA is waiving baggage fees today due to these problems.
