Wow, has it really been 6 years? Unbelievable...
I was listening to the LiveATC feed that morning (when it was still a CUNY feed) and heard the multiple calls for American 587 from JFK Tower and eventually the report from another American aircraft (I think it was AAL686) that he saw what looked like an aircraft crashing and reported heavy smoke. Very chilling, and to this day, I still can't bring myself to board an A300.

Wow. I remember that very clearly. It's unfortunate that this crash is mostly forgotten, being so close to 9/11 and the Concorde crash.
