AA Flight 587 Crash: 6 Years Ago Today

A look back at a terrible tragedy during a frightening period in our nation's history.

Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. We have a small problem.
All four engines have stopped. We are doing our damnedest to get them under control.
I trust you are not in too much distress. —Captain Eric Moody, British Airways Flight 9

Wow, has it really been 6 years? Unbelievable...

I was listening to the LiveATC feed that morning (when it was still a CUNY feed) and heard the multiple calls for American 587 from JFK Tower and eventually the report from another American aircraft (I think it was AAL686) that he saw what looked like an aircraft crashing and reported heavy smoke. Very chilling, and to this day, I still can't bring myself to board an A300.

EDIT: Found the ATC Transcript I was thinking about...It really is chilling, so read with caution

Wow. I remember that very clearly. It's unfortunate that this crash is mostly forgotten, being so close to 9/11 and the Concorde crash.
