    I'm Overbearing.

This happened about 5 horus ago, and I'm still laughing at it.

One of my jobs is as security at a small club. Friday night is a European techno DJ and it attracts a lot of the same faces every week, about 100-120 of them.

At one point I go in the bathroom. Some guy didn't see me and I see a nice handful of coke in his hand. I ask him where his coat is and tell him to get it because he is going home.

Everyone inside this palce sees me escort the guy to his coat and then out the door.

Then I go back to the bathroom. Some guy comes out of the stall just shoving something into his pocket, his nose all red, sniffing alot and wiping his nose. A brief and easy question and answer session and this is the second guy to go home for coke within 3 minutes.

After that guy leaves, the DJ comes up to me and pulls me aside. He asks me to be less overbearing when it comes to coke because he doesn't wnat to make his people feel uncomfortable.

Ilaughed so hard. I wasn't being forceful or rude to the guysI busted. Anyone who knows me knows how I am at my other bar when peopel as much as light a cigarette. I'm SO toned down at this bar that I'm almost proud of myself. And this guy dsays I'm overbearing? Ha.

He was really asking me to stop busitng people for coke, because he knows damn well that 90% of his crowd does it in there. Not my problem, his music sucks anyway.

Eitherway, my enforcement had an effect on the crowd already. All the typical faces that look like they do coke all ended up leaving within the next 10 minutes.

He might as well have said "Hey, can you lighten up when my fnas are doing harcore drugs out int he open? Thanks."

What a fool. DON'T NOTHIN GO DOWN IN MY HOUSE! haha

    Yeha, I don't doubt it.

The Friday night crowd is the same group every week. My buddy and I keep banning people and the crowd is smaller than the week before.

We've considered what you're saying, and we're kinda thinking that the DJs group of friends are dealers in there. My buddy and I are usually on stop of stuff, so I'm surprised we haven't caught them yet, but we'll see what happens.

We might kick out that party and get a new DJ for Friday nights.

What's the opinion of the club onwer on the matter? Obviously he wants to make money but I'm sure he doesn't want to get closed down like so many other clubs. I remember going to the Tunnel for the first time, holy hell talk about a haven for drugs, sick place though, hehe

God.....The Tunnel. Let's not even go there. lol

We have two owners, and both are complete opposites.

One of the owners is French, well-dressed, tall and thin, always hopped on coke, an extreme tightass and tells me to resolve EVERY dispute without violence or even causing a scene. He'd rather I be passive about thigns liek drugs to avoid risking any kind of confrontaiton. He is scared that if people see security doing their jobs, people will get scared and leave. He is also scared, I'm sure, of police coming and busting HIM for coke. I wouldn't be surprised if he was in on the DJ/Drug thing.

Spencer and Ryan had the opportunity to meet these fguys. Maybe they can sure their opinions.

The other owners is shorter, fatter, American, dresses relaxed and and is an alcoholic, more loose and funny, and wants me to resolve problems, especially with drugs, with extreme violence. He says if I find someone doin coke, to take them in the back and beat the **** out of them and to tell him, so he can get a few punches in.

Obviously, there is a middle ground. I listen more to the general manager's directions on how to handle this stuff. I was hired as security, and regardless of what they want, I am going to make sure that my place is secure, bottom line. Otherwise I am showing peopel that show up that I can't do my job, or that I have a tolerance for drugs, which I don't. I'll sooner quit.

Unfortunately this is more of a widespread problem than just the club where Phil works.

Many club owners, especially at large clubs where they let everyone in, turn a blind eye to this type of behavior and give breaks and benefits to well known drug dealers. Exit, Sound Factory and Limelight (now Avalon) were all hit hard with this, with all of them being shut down at one point or another for repeated drug violations.

The club scene in NYC is so competitive, most clubs need to fill up to make money. Many drugs, such as ecstacy, cocaine and sexstacy, enhance the club "experience" especially at the rave type clubs, where dance and techno music is prevalent. A better club experience leads to more talk about the club, which leads to people coming back and other people checking it out.

Ultimately, the bottom line is MONEY. Club owners don't care about your health (in fact many have been caught throwing OD'ers out back doors, or putting them in cabs to get them away) and care only about turning a profit. Drugs ultimately lead to greater profits by clubs.

    I applaud Phil's actions.

The way it works in England is the security actually detain the person in possession of the drugs, the Police are called and the person gets arrested and gets a slap on the wrist (only for small possession). A big word goes out to all clubbers that drugs are not tolerated and you will not just get thrown out but arrested and a conviction.

On the owners - haha, a couple of hooray henry's if you ask me!

Although that may work in a smaller US city, in NYC this would never fly.
Not only does your bouncer now have to try and detain somebody, but has to have someone to supervise that person.
Add to that, the presence of police in front of your club, along with word spreading about how your club is being hardcore about an issue most see as petty.

Add to that police who have much more important things to worry about than busting minor drug offences at clubs.

I guess I'll have to be the odd man out on this one. I personally see nothing wrong with people sniffing coke in the bathroom as long as they are not bothering anyone. But good job on doing your job!

The problem is, cocaine is an illegal drug, and club owners face SEVERE penalties if found to be encouraging use of such substances.

Also, many of these drugs lead to more serious problems and can result in abnormal behavior by the users which can affect others around them.

When people are on drugs, they get stupid and do strupid things. I'd rather stop them before or as they are doing the drugs so I don't have to deal with more serious **** later (fights, ODing, etc.)
