As Phil said I meant "shock" as in "surprise." I was not surprised to hear this news. I respect her courage and I'm saddened by her death. But this is a part of the world where every month of progress is usually met by a force that sets them back 50 years. Essentially everyone in Pakistan with the means to kill this woman wanted her dead. I am surprised it took them as long as it did.

And unfortunately, she made it all to easy for them:
Ladies and gentlemen, this is your captain speaking. We have a small problem.
All four engines have stopped. We are doing our damnedest to get them under control.
I trust you are not in too much distress. —Captain Eric Moody, British Airways Flight 9

Third world country or not, private security or government-provided, high-profile people like her should not be transported or show themselves like that. We learned that after Kennedy.

It is a huge lapse in very basic security procedure.
Very true. I think she knew this and wouldn't hide. Unfortunately nobody can be protected all the time. I remember one of the best quotes in the Godfather when Pacino said if history has taught us anything it's that anybody can be killed. I just hope she didn't die in vain. I don't agree with Matt's 50 year amount but this is a setback. I just hope somebody steps up because that country is a stick of dynamite and the fuse is close to being lit.

I think her own safety certainly wasn't a top priority for herself. She had to symbolize a strong figure and leader for her followers, and one certainly doesn't win an election while hiding behind glass or at her home. She knew it was likely to happen, as she said in the interviews before....it's tragic, but she knew her life shouldn't be the top priority.

Wasn't (and please correct me if I'm off track!) basically her entire family assasinated over the last years also?
    MD-11 heaven...place to be!
