From my own experience, I went with gf in october 2010 to Empire State Building, security(I should say: "security") took a little knife, about 2" blade that I have attached as a key chain.
However, they allowed me with a telephoto lense. If I wanted, I could cause more damage with my telephoto lense than I could do that with little knife...
A few years ago, I had a trip: JFK-HEL-VNO and VNO-HEL-JFK...
I had a same little knife (~2" blade - it's actually our Co. where I do work, promo item, I use a keychain) on all 4 flights.
Just security @ VNO asked me to show that knife and then gave me back.
There were no emblems @ JFK or HEL...
Last year, I flew on Lufthansa A380. Lufthansa served meal with no plastic, but stainless steel forks and knifes...
