I'm out in Tucson for some training, and made the stop by the Pima Air and Space Museum. This plane was of special interest:
A Grumman Wiegon, made in Bethpage.
The engines are Rangers, made in Farmingdale at Republic Airport.
And the hull was modified for testing by EDO, of College Point, Queens.

The three most common expressions in aviation are, "Why is it doing that?", "Where are we?" and "Oh Crap".
They also have two Convairs of interest, the B-36 Peacemaker and the supersonic B-58 Hustler. The engineer that designed the Hustler did it on his own time after work. Another aircraft he designed after work was the F-16.
The great thing about Pima is that you can touch and crawl around the aircraft.
I have a couple of snapshots of an art installation going on there - derelict DC-3's painted up with street art. Really amazing.

When I went a few years ago it was pretty hot (October) but like you said you are on your own in this wonderland of aircraft.
This was part of the art installation at the Pima Air and Space museum.
There were several derelict DC-3's painted up this way.
