Flight attendants: Carry-on crunch is a pain

(Watch the video, the comment at the end of the video is priceless!!!)

With most airlines charging at least $20 to check a bag, flight attendants find people are trying to cram larger luggage into overhead bins, but that could change if congress passes a law limiting the size of carry-on bags.
The nation's largest flight attendant union, the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, asked congress to pass stricter rules and create a universal size for bags.

"They'll buy these small bags and pack everything they own into these small little bags, and then they get mad when they don't fit," said traveler Aubrey Harte.

A survey of flight attendants from 22 airlines found more than 80-percent have been hurt in the past year by dealing with carry-on bags in overhead bins.

Half of the attendants surveyed said they have seen bags fall out of the bins and a third have been hit when a carry-on tumbled out.

Another traveler, June Spanier, said, "They're trying to not have to pay for their baggage. It's a pain."

    .

Don't buy that for one minute.... With the amount of times I fly I've never seen that happen. Yes I'm sure it happens and I'm sure it happens with normal size carryon bags as well but FA's tend to whine and make things into larger issues then they really are. They should stick to bringing me another gin and tonic and pipe down ;) lol

Sheesh! Haven't you learned anything!? Gin an Iced Tea or Pineapple juice. Tonic gives the hangover's out. I made the switch and have't regretted the extra glass the night before again.

On topic, this is just an article to fill space. If a bag isnt going to make it the F/A's usually spot it before it makes it through the door and tell you to gate check it.

I wouldnt knock on F/A's so hard. They have the job I do not envy them for. At first glance they are sky waitresses but you would be suprised. And for what they make I credit those that stick to the trade. Their duty max is alot longer than pilots, they have no choice in dealing with the pax and they are the first responder in the cabin when somthing goes wrong. I quite possibly owe my life to a American Airlines F/A and his training last week in fact.

I'm not knocking on them at all. I understand what they go though. But if you look at this it is just a sceme to do less work. Smaller bags means pax will be able to get them in the bins themselves F/E wont have to do anything. Less work. But to be honest I wouldnt be suprised of this gets through. It means the companies that make the travel bags will rake in alot of dough cause travelers will have to buy new bags in order to fly. Money hungry companies for the loss. Next. That doesnt sound good.

Sure sounds like you are knocking them...and what a concept, actually being able to stow your own bag.

Back in the dark ages, when I was flying with Wilbur and Orville, I remember TWA had a "template" (for lack of a better word) that you had to fit your carry-on into - if it didn't fit, you had to check it. Nowadays, people take larger and larger bags, and stuff more and more into them. And while it certainly has gotten worse with checked-bag fees, it started out more a function of people being it too much of a rush to actually wait on a checked bag after their flight - they wanted to grab their bags out of the overhead, push their way off the airplane, and rush off to whatever "critical" things they feel they needed to do. I don't fly much these days, but when I do, I'm amazed at the amount of crap people carry on and cram into the overhead, completely disregarding what others may have already stowed, and even dumping their stuff in any open spot regardless of where they are sitting, taking up space that should be available to passengers seated in those spots.

Remember I am still working at T7 I handle bags all day long. Whatever doesnt fit or make it into the bins gets sent down me on the ramp. It isnt the size as they are within the size they say will fit into the bins. Its the amount. Pax dont like the fees so they are taking more than one bag up now. So the bis fill and there is overflow. They dont like that.

Of course not, nobody is going to like the luggage fees, on top of the fuel fees, makes sense. The nickle & dime fees are always annoying......

Something that ticked me off a little, I belong to United's mileage plus plan, paid an extra $350 to gurantee that I get an economy plus seat, as part of the plan, I was allowed to 3 check-in bags, well, half-way through, United changed the rules. Now I am charged for a domestic check-in luggage, but, it is free for international, for 2 bags.

Mike did you ask for half your money back? Seems to me like they broke their agreement. I'd call my bank and dispute the charge.

People carry on way too much crap. Especially the pax who carry on their regular size luggage so they don't have to check it. It's gotten out of control the FA are right.

You should be able to carry on one bag and one notebook and case. Check the rest and give not only FAs but other pax a break.

They have that rule already. One bag per pax. Most ppl dont follow it though.
