JAL 747 Eats a Baggage Container at LAX

Baggage Cart Sucked Into Jet Engine At LAX
    May 11, 2009 5:52 pm US/Pacific
    LOS ANGELES (AP) ?

A metal baggage container was sucked into an engine of a Boeing 747 as it was leaving a terminal gate Monday at Los Angeles International Airport, authorities said. No one was injured.

The incident occurred as Japan Airlines Flight 61 to Narita, Japan, was pushing back from the Tom Bradley International Terminal about 1:30 p.m., said Marshall Lowe, an airport spokesman.

Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said a baggage cart was being towed at the same time and the engine ingested one of its containers.

leave it to the media to confuse a bag cart with an LD3.
it is mathematically impossible for either hummingbirds, or helicopters to fly. fortunately, neither are aware of this.

A cart carrying containers....I think they explained it properly. Bit of a reach to expect the media to say "LD3".

Baggage containers have names. An LD-3 is what you see in that photo there. I believe they will fit on 767s and A330/340s. It is a "half container" where you can put the container side by side with another one. There is also an LD-8, which is like two LD-3's put together.

There are many other kinds, but these are just examples of some of the most common.
