    Runway Usage

I can't figure why JFK is using the 22's this morning with a 350 degree wind at 8. LGA is using 4 and EWR is using 4R. Unless the 4R ILS is out-of-service, I can't figure the reason. I am aware that it is permissible to use runways not aligned into the wind but this is not common. I know there must be an explanation. This is hardly the first time that this has been seen.

Have you checked the NOTAMS for any TFRs? Also I know there is a clipper that is going to pound the Hudson Valley and Catskills with up to 6 inches of snow.

    Re: Runway Usage

A few weeks back I was over at Howard Beach and listening to the Transmissions between the Tower and Pilot.

The pilot had asked why they were using a certain runway and the Tower responded that it was not there call and that the runway decision was coming from Washington. The Controller also made the following comment "Safety is not a priority". The Controller seemed just as confused as anybody else as to why a certain runway was in use. This conversation between the Controller and pilot went on for a good 10 minutes.

I found this all very interesting.

I thought I heard that the Prez was coming into town on the morning news...could this be the reason?

I can say that the winds this morning at EWR aloft were about 235@51 with the winds shifting to 070@9 at under 700 feet. Theres alot of variables out there. We were on the 22's one day last week with the surface winds 040@6 but the winds aloft were in the 230@30 range.

That would certainly a factor. a 51 kt tailwind would cause some problems during the approach. Particularly with a heavy landing on the relatvely short 4R where there isnt much margin.
