Kenko Teleconverters for Canon EF 100-300mm Tele?

Greetings,

I have the Canon D60 DSLR (circa 2003) with a Canon 100-300mm tele zoom.

I'd like to extend my "tele reach" without going into long-term debt and was thinking of getting a Kenko 1.4x or 2.0x teleconverter. Granted it'll mean exposure compensation but I see no realistic financial alternative.

Has anyone else gone this route? Comments? Tips? Counter-suggestions? Thanks.

Well, you can do it, but that doesn't mean you should. At 300mm, the lens is already at f/5.6, and with a 2x TC you're looking at shooting f/11 wide open. I don't think the Kenko TCs report their presence to the camera, so the camera will at least try to autofocus, but it won't be very reliable.

The bigger concern I'd have is image quality. The 100-300 (assuming you mean the non-"L" version) isn't great optically to begin with, and putting a 2x TC on it is only going to make it a lot worse.

First where are you planning on shoting that you need more then 300mm? The only place you'd need 400mm + would be Howard Beach. All other spotting locations don't require 300mm, I say save your money.
