Although its not in the North East but more of the South East....the Fort Lauderdale Air & Sea Show!! I will be attending that from April 29th until May 1st. Song flight 2072 LGA-FLL, than US Airways flight 328 FLL-LGA FIRST CLASS! WOO HOO!

I know I heard Thunderbird #8 went into JFK a few months ago, so I assume they'll stage out of JFK. They need 7,000 feet of runway, and FRG doesn't cut it.

can someone tell me how far Langley is from NYC? never knew this airshow was on between 13-15th may, i won't be able to go but i am interested to know how far away it is just in case, so will the thunderbirds be at JFK that weekend? i hope you JFK boys aren't going to desert me! :D

From my place in South Jersey, it's a 300 mile drive to Langley AFB. So, from NYC, it would be about 400 miles. Toll-wise, when you go south, it would cost whatever to cross whatever NY crossings (anywhere from $6 to $15), then the amount for the NJ Turnpike (say, $5) - unless you're smart and get off at Exit 7A, go onto I-195 then take I-295 south, $3 for Delaware Memorial Bridge, two $1 tolls on Route 1 in Delaware, and $12 to cross the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.

Langley is anywhere between an 8 and 12 hour drive from NYC, depending on traffic and what type of driver you are. Definately worth the drive for the airshow, although with gas as high as it is now, although it may be a little more expensive, it may be more sensible to fly and rent a car...

i'm confused already! so that means i'll stick to staying in NYC, is it close to Virginia Beach at all?

Langley AFB is a 35-mile drive from Virginia Beach (via I-64 and I-264)...its in the same basic area (Hampton Roads, VA), which happens to be my favorite place to spend some vacation time!

The airshow at Andrews AFB looks awesome. I assume that all of the aircraft listed are actually going to be "performing," but correct me if I am mistaken.
Does anyone have any experience with Andrews (i.e., whether good photos can be had, where the sun would be in relation to the runways, etc.)? Do you think that show would be worth the drive from NYC? Also, what's this F-4 "Heritage Flight"? I would love to see an F-4 in action!
The show at Langley looks good, too, but it's the same weekend that Perth's No. 1 spotter is in town, and I sure wouldn't miss that! :D

Photography at Andrews can be a challenge, as the sun is in front of you in the morning. In the afternoon, it will be behind you. ADW has two runways, 1L/19R and 1R/19L, and the crowd line is, oh, say, about 900 feet away from the 1L/19R.
Heritage Flights... the USAF has been doing them since 1997, basically pairing up a World War II or Korean War-era warbird with a modern-day plane (A-10, F-15, or F-16) and flying a couple passes in formation. This year, the F-4 Phantom is being added to the Heritage Flights presumably to honor the Vietnam Veterans.
Some of my favorite Heritage Flight formations...

Steve,
No need to switch from the Turnpike to 295 via 195, you can do it quicker a little bit further down on Route 206 (the McGuire exit)
If anyone wants to go to Langley, I'm going to go down Friday night, leaving 5pm from Princeton, staying overnight near Dulles then to Langley the following morning. Staying overnight Saturday near Dulles, then heading back north around midday on Sunday.

The RI ANG airshow in June now features the CANADIAN FORCES SNOWBIRDS, in addition to that spectacular lineup they have for the airshow!
