A friend and I were in a Cessna 172 and circled over NY. Definitely one of my most memorable flights.

Yeah, they definitely look unique. I believe that aircraft used to fly for Midwest, so it probably did go into LGA back in the day.

Why not the 70-200L IS f/4? I've never had a 100-400, and the vast majority of my spotting is through the 70-200.
