PHL is my local "big" airport and spotting there is a breeze. Like Mark said, Paul has done a LOT for spotting there and as long as you remain on the side of Hog Island Road by the Delaware River, you won't have any issues. I'm not saying it's 100% - it's more like 99.8% likely you won't be asked to leave. Pull as far off the road as you can for your safety - the UPS trucks and the hot shots are to be aware of. I swear there's usually one or more people using the straight sections down by 9R as a drag strip since that part of the road is not as traveled as the 27R part.
Sergio, I would be careful if you're on the railroad tracks. It's still an active railway (though I have yet to see a train go by) but the real concern are the ATV drivers when they kick up dust, dirt, stones, and even mud.
I do agree about the variety of traffic being meh, but look at it this way - at least US Airways has more than one type in their fleet! Oh, and there's always a chance of catching one of at least twelve special scheme A319s...
