An arrival from today...

Yep I knew as soon as I saw that at FRG I knew the Islanders were losing another game. Nice shot Fred!
Damn Fred, that is a very nice shot! Great vantage and you really nailed the focus and exposure (I know how tough it is when the wrong side is lit)
Thanks guys... really loving that new lens and 7D! No sharpening done, just a little shadow highlight only. Loving the new glass ;)
Here is a touchdown shot

Later at the departure

I got the Tamron 70-300 DI VC USD lens... this lens is WAY underpriced!!!
This morning I took about 50 shots of this bird coming in with my thumb nailed on the auto focus and every shot was this sharp. I was at
250th of a second and the VC (IS) is awesome. I would expect with my 40D and old Tammy 70-300 without stabilization to get about
1 of 8 shots soft or a little blurred with 250th of a second. I had NOT ONE SOFT IMAGE! This lens is GREAT! I can not wait for airshow!!!!

Thanks for the reply Fred, that looks very sharp for a $400.00 lens. I was looking into the Canon 70-200 f4 or 2.8 and generally shy away from Tamron since I had a 200 - 400 lens and it was very soft. For 1/3 or less the price of the Canon's with more range, it may be a no brainer, although I usually rent the Canon 100 - 400 for the airshows.
Thanks,
Joe
For anyone that is interested, a Beechcraft 35 with Pan American markings is at the Museum right now. According to flight Aware it arrived at 2is and was due to depart at 3:00, however it is currently 4:09 and it is just sitting there. I am going to try and go back and get a picture or two.
Joe
joe that is not a be35 its the eastern airlines DC7 with the panam paint on one side its in for sony pictures filing a tv pilot or movie should be here a week
Not the greatest of angles. She was tucked away in the back by Atlantic. Brought in the Toronto Maple Leafs for tonights Islander game.

The Atlantic guys always put the hockey charters that way.
I knew there was a "method to their madness".:biggrin:
Quick story not totally FRG related but does involve an FRG resident .... I get out of the LIRR Hicksville front of the train then down the stairs there. Its POURING RAIN and the winds are kicking up big time. I reach the bottom and I hear the sound of an approaching copter. Look over to see one of Cablevisions S-76s roaring in from the south at about 500 feet!! Right over the station they do a hard banking turn and line up to head into the Bethpage pad. Gotta tell you it looked pretty cool and it was LOUD. People were actually lowering their umbrellas to check it out!!
this happens 4 times a day. There are actually 2 birds that come in in the morning, lunch, after lunch, and in the evening. I was told that this isnt even an approved landing zone, and he is fined for each landing. Not sure how true it is, but it makes sense to me.
With all the excitement of the DC7, FAA's N59 is parked over at Sheltair.
If you were in the FRG area and you thought you heard the sound or saw a blackhawk you're right! There was one there around 4ish and promptly left.

They actually have 3 S-76s and from their ops during the day it looks like a dedicated corporate shuttle. I get off the train at Hicksville around 5:30 and a copter is usually landing or departing from/to the NW.
They also land here...... http://www.airnav.com/airport/NY75
The landing pad Gerard linked to is in Woodbury, south of Jericho Turnpike, at the Cablevision complex. Bethpage has a Cablevision complex with a listed helipad as well. Given it is a published helipad, and they aren't just dropping in onto the front lawn of the building, I suspect they aren't fined for landing there.
The Nassau County Police also have a helipad nearby in Bethpage, but it is not generally open to public use.
WOW! What a nice surprise today. OO-JAA, a Sun Country/TuiFly 737-800 Hybrid just came to Atlantic's main ramp. From the flight plan, it appears that they are here to take the St. John's men's basketball team out to Denver for the NCAA tourney. Pics tonight.
as promised, the Sun Country/TuiFly hybrid from this afternoon. Crappy weather + point & shoot = less than ideal shot, but, it's a keeper for me.

Great catch, John! I swung by around 4pm, but he must have been long gone...:frown:
LOL, I read hybrid and thought it was some new type of plane.
Is this new for St. Johns using FRG for their flights? I dont remember seeing or hearing about them in the past.
Great catch John! I couldn't scoot down there in time to catch it. RATS!!!
The French government Falcon 7X is at SheltAir.

Great catch on the French Falcon Moose! I'm going to start a rumor that the reason they are here is to plan on the arrival of the French Aerobatic team for the Jones Beach Airshow!
Hey not the first time. In June of 1986 they flew over in formation at the very end of my Northport HS graduation ceremony on the way to FRG. Luckily my celebratory dinner was at the 56th, so I got to see the Alpha Jets all lined up on the ops ramp. Ah memories.............

So Jones Beach is getting these guys, Patrouille de France.
Anybody know what was going on at FRG last evening? I was on my way home, scooting down New Hwy at around 7pm-ish. There were lots of cars parked on the road, including 2 SCPD cars. Large trucks were in the parking lots. Didn't have time to stop and check it out. Was it a movie shoot or something else entirely?
Shooting the TV show has been going on.
