Tips for home wireless router.
Hey all.
I was hoping for a bit of computer advice.
At home, I have the modem which is hardwired to the computer. Now that we have the PS3, I have to hook that up to the internet and apparently my PS3 has wireless capability included.
So I have a wireless router now that I may hook up tonight or over the weekend. I'd like to leave the desktop computer hardwired to the modem.
So what do I do? I assume I plug the modem into the router, then wire that to the computer, right? That would be part 1. But for the PS3, any tips for setting up the wireless?
Re: Tips for home wireless router.
What kind of router did you get? You're a smart guy, you should be able to figure out how to set everything up by reading the instructions :)
There should be a port labeled "WAN" on the router. Plug the cable modem into that. Then plug the computer into one of the other ports on the router.
If you want to use the PS3 over wireless, once you have set up the router, you should just be able to enter the SSID (wireless router identifier) and WEP key (wireless password) in the PS3 network setup and it will work. At least that's how mine worked during the brief period when I owned a PS3...
Re: Tips for home wireless router.
I would run the modum to the router than run it all via the router. Last night I rewired my girlfriends setup for her and we ran in to problems with the setup otherwise. The modum and the hardwired computer were linked with a USB cable which I promptly removed and than ran the wire to the router and than Cat 6 cable to the computer from there. There were connectivity issues with the laptops for some reason or another if I did not do it that way.
Re: Tips for home wireless router.
My first advice is....READ the instructions that came with the router....If you don't Mario you might not set it up correctly. I recently bought a Linkys wireless router and its not as simple as plugging it in, you need to read the directions. Howerver its not that hard...just plug the modem into he router and then everything else gets connected to the router. But read the directions....

Tommy, just go over to Mario's house & hook the damn thing up
Re: Tips for home wireless router.
Plugging it in is the easy part. Getting Windows to play nice with it is sometimes nerve wracking.
Re: Tips for home wireless router.
Matt, its interesting that you said that. If I keep the computer/desk top hardwired to the router, than shouldnt windows not behaving be a non event?

Its the fact that Windows has to recognize it first, once it does it shouldn't be a problem. Did you read the instructions? Most of the time you have to first install the software first then hook up the router. Do you want me to give you the Nick V style of instruction?
Re: Tips for home wireless router.
LOL, nah.
I have read them and will read them again. I know to run the disc first. I'm the knd of guy that reads the instructions like a recipe a few times before I do it :)
Just wanted to be sure this schematic was possible:
modem plugs into router, then
---->wireless router------>hardwire----->desktop
!
!
!------>airwaves (wireless :mrgreen:)---> PS3
I mean it sounds straightforward. I just would rather not also make the desktop connect wireless too.
Yes, I know I can be so anal at times.
Re: Tips for home wireless router.
OOOOK,
1, anytime you change the device hooked up to your modem, you NEED to reset the modem. The modem will only look at one device....ie router or a pc. If you unplug 1 pc and plug in a different one, it should NOT work until you reset the modem by pulling the power.
Cablevision only gives you 1 IP so you need to plug the modem into the router...bounce or reset the modem and wait until the 4green top lights on the Moto or the cable light on the webstar come solid. Then power up your router. Hard wire you PC to the router and that should now be online (after about 15 seconds and pending a reboot for some internet security software). Then setup the laptop wirelessly and make sure to set up security. If you need help with this there should be an 800 number for router support.
Re: Tips for home wireless router.
My wireless router has 8 ports in it. If your's does not have any ports, wait until a router is on sale for $20.....check the circulars -Fred
Re: Tips for home wireless router.
It's difficult to set up because it's so addicting and they want to give people the chance to decide not to.
Don't do it, Mario!
Re: Tips for home wireless router.
Mario just read the instructions! LOLOL ;) Oh did you buy a Linksys? If not return it and buy a Linksys. I say any further post to this thread is designed to confuse Mario to the point he throws the router out the window, LOLOLOLOLOL

I did too last year, the CD walks you through it and it's simple. Just follow the directions.
