I got my 70mm-300mm from B&H Photo (http://www.bhphotovideo.com) and I'm very happy with it! The prices are pretty good there as well (well, so I've found :) ) - others might have better suggestions.
You may find the 80-200 2.8 a little better. More expensive but much better focusing and much sharper results. It's a solid lens. You can always save for a good TC or a 400mm zoom later.
what is your budget? The AF-S 70-200 2.8 VR is very good, but also very expensive. When we know what you are looking to spend we will be able to give better advise.
while nick is probably going to argue with me over this one, i use the nikkor 80-400VR. in my expericnce, it's a great lense with a lightning fast auto focus. shooting with the VR takes some getting used to but once you're there you're set for life.
as always, price is always a factor. i used to use the 70-300mm but never was satisfied with the results. if you can afford it, i'd say that the 80-400 is the way to go.

I know you sold it to me!Quote:

If you're interested, I know someone selling a used but mint (it looks/acts/runs/drives :) like new) Nikon 80-200/f2.8 AF-D ED. Not sure of your budget but you'll probably be able to save a few $$ over a new one which goes for $924 on B&H.Quote:

He just purchased a new 70-200/f2.8 AF-S so it's the only reason he's getting rid of the 80-200.

Now Tommy this person made an intelligent decision to buy a Nikon camera and join the ranks of the greats like Mike McLaughlin, Art Brett, Sam Chui and Josh Akbar just to name a few. Leave him alone!Quote:

And as far a Canon goes, you guys and a gal are "gifted" for using that 100-400L trombone!
