That's all fine and dandy...it's actually a smart move, since my high school (Forest Hills High School, which is not listed, as you'll see below) is "plagued" by the incessant roar of jets on the Expressway Visual or departing 13 at LGA. But I do have to wonder...

I am Deaf and I can still here planes, you also forget jets create a low rumble too, whihc you FEEL, and I can feel them quite well.

and most deaf people wear hearing aids anyhow which enables them to hear the sounds.

but all we gotta do is turn it off, lol.

You're right, Alex, it's probably to provide insulation against vibrations (and sound, for whatever employees there are who can hear). My aunt teaches deaf students at Nassau Community College, and she had the same thing to say.

I attended Beach Channel High School 1976-1980.

It is or was..probably still is.. a rather nice place as New York Public Schools go.

There is a nice courtyard in the center, a good size auditorium, about 8 gymnasiums, a swimming pool, tennis courts, track, football field, softball field, well appointed Science Labs, decent library and apart from whatever I have forgotten, some classrooms primarily used for Art Classes on the 3rd floor with very high ceilings with large angled windows facing Jamaica Bay.

When aircraft are landing on the 4s, it can be rather loud in those 3rd floor classrooms. for a few seconds. Of course in 1980, the aircraft were a bit louder than they are now.

Bottom line..it will be of some use and appreciated by some I am sure, but a waste of the Port's money overall in my opinion.

Oh yeah, there were also inflatable boats we could take out onto Jamaica Bay as well. I would have to believe those are gone now due to liability issues, and that is certainly a shame.

Here is my question...others in the same city (see the Bronx) the grants differed by tops half a million bucks. What is so special about McKinley school in Newark? Is that school built at the end of a runway or something? I mean a $4mil difference??? Holy Sh*t!

It's 1.5 miles from the end of Teterboro Runway 6/24. I'm sure it's pretty loud, but $11.6 million is A LOT of soundproofing. Compared to all the schools near LGA and JFK which deal with a much higher volume of traffic, and heavier/louder aircraft, getting much less money, there is definitely some crookedness in this deal, which is the norm when dealing with the Port Authority.

I don't like this. A private entity purposely built a college next one of the busiest runways in the world. Wasn't it soundproofed when it was built?
