Water Salute question [Archive]

I am just hanging out in BWI and I noticed 2 firetrucks line up and hang out. My initial thought was that they were positioning for a "christening" of a new plane, but it turns out the plane is 22 years old. Anyone know why they would "salute" an old plane? Is it retiring? Thanks

They will often do that for the last flight of a pilot who is retiring.
