Dear friends,

First post here, a small introduction is due: airline piloto based in South America, flying freighters for a living with quite a few flights to Southern Florida per month, avid spotter and enthusiast (since the early 90's) and currently a Nikon guy. Always ready for a good banter, some friendly chat and a pint or two of Sam Adams (when in the States).

So, for this year vacations I am planning a trip to New York area and I have been scheduled to take them around September, which I understand is roughly when the UN General Assembly takes place, and, therefore, a interesting array of traffic is expected in JFK. Now the main question is, when are the best days, or best week, traffic-wise, it seems to be the last week of September, is this correct? I have to combine my NYC trip with another part of the trip, so knowing the exact days is a good start.

Thanks for any help and time permitting, I will try to be a regular visitor around here

Stay safe chaps
Cheers

BF

This years UNGA is scheduled for Sept 16-29, 2014

Opening date of the General Assembly is Sept 16, 2014
Opening date of the general debate is Sept 23, 2014

So, plan accordingly.

With the General Debate opening on the 23rd, that means that the bulk of the traffic will arrive between the 20th and 22nd. Some will arrive the week before as well, but those three days will give you the best bang for your buck if you have limited time to spend here.

Thanks for the very informative answers so far.
Will indeed plan accordingly and hopefully will be able to make it work.

Let's get this thing planned!!! I went through and took some information others have posted, if it's changed, let me know!

I really like shooting with others, and I haven't gotten out much lately, so I'd love to meet up with a decent group. One year we had close to 30 people at the mounds, but last year people split up into a lot of smaller groups and I always think that's a shame.

I've told all my friends/family that I am unavailable this weekend - spotting galore!

Typically heavy action the weekend before main event, so this coming weekend. But you can never tell. Planes come and go 24x7 for the next three weeks, impossible to predict anything other than AF-1

So I had my first dream about UNGA spotting last week. UN Week vibe now officially in my blood.

I am not going to be so foolish so as to mention what I am hoping to see. Instead, I offer the following prayer:

"Oh, mighty and powerful spotting gods
Behold, your humble supplicants are gathered before thee
Incline thine ear to our prayer.
Such that, you see fit to bestow upon us
A veritable bounty of exotic registrations, liveries, and most importantly, types
To make this year's General Assembly
A cornucopia of crazy-a** airplanes
And an avoidance of that damn 13L/22L split
We beseech thee! To bathe in the light of the Super Bowl of Plane Spotting
So that we may dwell in the house of Kennedy Airport(and Stewart Airport for the parked aircraft), forever and ever"

Amen, brothers

See you on Saturday

I definitely will be as anti-social as I need to be when hunting or gathering. Besides we can hang out whenever you like as long as it is not UN Week. One needs to track and pay close attention to the radio. One missed handoff can be the difference between 31R and 31L and from Costco to Inwood can be a quick uneventful swing and a 15 minute expletive laced failure (been there done that)

(and yes, I will still give you a big ol hug, just don't be pissed when I ignore you the rest of the day  not personal)

I was there on a random Thursday last UN Week (don't judge me) shooting on 13L and only caught an Abu Dhabi Amiri 77L. Will the traffic be available on LiveATC and would you rather stand by The Mounds runway or The hotel runway (I'm confused!)

Len, I am geared toward Saturday just so you know.

As Manny stated "One needs to track and pay close attention to the radio." Having a radio or listening to LiveATC will be helpful. The key thing is to stay focused and listen. Happy UNGA hunting!

William ... Amen to that prayer!!!!

LiveATC will be OK but remember to reduce the buffer in settings to have less delay. Typically LiveATC is 3-5 seconds behind. That can be the difference in missing a catch if you have to re-locate.

The pattern at JFK will change with the winds if they are strong enough but sometimes commands come from higher up in Washington because of the broader EWR/JFK/TEB/PHN/FRG congestion (as told to a pilot by the tower some time ago after a pilot got upset they had to land in poor crosswind conditions). There is no rhyme or reason but, they usually like 22/13 split in the afternoon and 4/31 in the morning during September.

Having a scanner with a headset and paying attention is the best way to catch all the action and to [contribute] back to the community. The more ears on more frequencies the better.

Zee71
2014-09-16, 09:38 AM
Ditto to what Manny says! In addition, if you do miss an arrival you should be able to catch the departure, since JFK doesn't have the room to accommodate and park all UN visitors. They typically are in and out, the PANYNJ allows them 2 hours before they need to relocate the aircraft to another airfield. I think I've made a contribution.

Most of us locals, the ones that care about actually photographing planes of all types, wait all year for this special two week period. We are out almost every weekend and sometimes during the week. MOST of the time I see absolutely NO ONE, I am all by myself NOT by choice. All of a sudden, during the most sought after time of the year for us, throngs of spotters descent on JFK to also enjoy UN Week. All I ask is to respect and consider what others enjoy about the hobby, whatever that may be. I welcome everyone and hope anyone who I am not so frendly with understands that it is not personal, I am just concentrating on the radio chatter and trackers.

Usually, when traffic is on 31's or 22's or 13's is when I am most unfriendly and abrupt since we have a lot of challenges to move to another location.

The 4s offer us all the opportunity to just hang out and relax and chew the fat since there is no option... you're stuck with what you got!

Finally, respecting spotting locations is a must. If you follow a local spotter and he/she leads you into a location that is sensitive, DO NOT, I repeat DO NOT go and throw a party! This happened a few times last year and it nearly ruined a few locations we like to reserve for special moments. If you're in a public park, by all means do as you wish, but in sensitive areas, keep a very low key and follow the lead of the locals.

I am known to be the big mouth when it comes to expressing my opinion and for that I take full credit even if it means I lose a few friends in the process. I know lots of folks that keep these feelings a secret so I know I am not alone in what I am saying. If anyone really knows me, you know you can count on me to be very generous and friendly... but please, UN Week is very serious for serious spotters, all I ask is a little respect of such and not to read too much into it. Come hang out with us on a lazy boring Sunday and you will get a much better perspective of what we are really like

MSN007

Manny your points are valid. When you have many folks gathered there will be playing and chatting creating room for error. I am hopping we will do more work than chatting and playing in a group. Instead of one person combing the entire globe by himself on planefinder we can divide by region and make life easier. The same with the four approach frequencies on the radio. No one should be called hater for deciding to be alone. For instance I am not big fun of Costco which offers more belly than side so I may not join the group if they are on the 31s so that shouldn't make me a hater.

Today the president of Ukraine will arrive in Washington. He speaks at Congress on Thursday.

I have greatly benefited from the assistance of other spotters and look forward to spending some time shooting the breeze, but I intend to come prepared with my radio to do whatever I can to contribute tracking the rare ones as Fasil had suggested. The way I look at it, I have to pay it forward. A few years back it was Cary who helped me get the Turkmenistan 767 during UNGA, he was very mellow about it and I just followed his lead as Manny said. Two years ago it was Eric who reported hearing that a Tupelov was inbound, and a half hour later I was fist pumping like a maniac after we shot it. Speaking of Manny, what he mentioned about the difference between regular spotting and UNGA is a good point- I too am happy to schmooze amidst the CRJ's and ERJ's, but dang it....dangle that SP carrot in front of me and I become quite driven to achieve the mission.

Right now I am just hoping that something won't come up at the last minute to wreck my plans to hang out and watch the planes with everyone.

I guess UNGA week means different things to different people. I am blessed in the winter that I can see SPs and other stuff. In fact the superbowl for me was the evening Dave Budd and I hung with an SP for hours. I sat on the nose gear and watched the sun go down. I also enjoy the boneyards much more for the special things that you can find.

UNGA is awesome but if I miss something I miss it. Hopefully omlettes with Manny and I can claim victory!

Greetings,
I went to catch the UAE B788 A6-PFC as it arrived at SWF direct from the UAE. I had been dying to get this aircraft the moment I laid eyes on it. I have always been a fan of anything in the UAE Government colors as its one of my most favorite liveries (With the thick red cheatline). What a great way to start the UNGA. This could be the only new plane for me during this session but hopefully that won't be the case. Also getting a shot of my first Super Puma was a nice treat.

Not much action this brisk morning at Bayswater in terms of UN traffic, but we did get a treat to a concert. The afternoon was followed by the dreaded 13s and 22L split. For those shooting 13L arrivals had better luck than those of use waiting for 22L. The evening was capped off by the Kuwait 747 arriving on 13L. Here are a few shots from today's (9/19) outing.

I only walked from the PS 124 to across the street. Parked there saw it wasn't good, got out and decided to walk across the street to just stretch my legs. Camera was over my shoulder. Person I was with moved the car to the other side of 150th ave where I was going to sit and spot. Made it to the other side of the street where I was approached by an NYPD car. Total time there approximately 90 seconds.

About the Puma. Its at SWF for a job. Not sure how long it will be there but it would be great to get it departing. I just wish it was easier to track these Flying Cranes. I got a Erickson Air Crane S-64 Sky Crane a few years back at SWF. That was a Very nice catch to get.

I am sure that UAE 787 will be some aviation spam in a few months :)

Greetings,
So far two days in row 2 new planes for me.

I treked over to EWR today for the Nigeria I mean....errr "Niger".....B737. This one is a mixed bag. I was very disappointed that they got a new BBJ instead of flying in the very nice 737-200 they have/had. I have been hoping it would come but never under my watch the new livery leaves much to be desired when compared to the 737-200 colors. With that being said. On the upside I was able to add a new African country to my list of nations from the continent and a very exotic one at that. With the exception of maybe 3-4 counties remaining for me all the others don't have dedicated or significant VIP aircraft or use charters. In the end I am here to take pictures of VIP aircraft so I guess I did OK today! Ivory Coast Government "IVY01" came in shortly after on Generic CS-TLU A319 instead of the State 727-200. Togo was to come later into EWR (probably in the Generic Burkina Faso F7X they use).

Saturday wrapup - here's what I've been able to glean as far as interesting things that moved through the area today. Post if I've missed anything.
Zimbabwe - Z-WPF - B762, Air Zimbabwe. To JFK, has now left. They've gone to Stewart in the past, but nothing confirmed yet.
Qatar - A7-AFL - A332, Qatar Airways. To JFK, is now heading back across the Atlantic.
Indonesia - PK-GPE - A333, Garuda. To JFK, reposition IAD.
White 9601 - CS-TLU - A319. To EWR, reposition SWF. [Carried Cote d'Ivoire, thanks Senga!]
Niger - 5U-GRN - BBJ. To EWR, current location unknown. [EDIT: To SWF, thanks John!]
Argentina - T-01 - B752. Over Cape Cod (2100L), likely inbound JFK within the hour. [EDIT: Arrived JFK ~2130L] [EDIT2: Reposition WRI. aargh!]
Monaco - 3A-MGA - F7X. To TEB.
Malaysia - 9M-NAA - A319. To HPN.
Mexico - TP-01 - B752. Over Richmond (2100L), destination unknown. Typically the Mexicans go to Newark and reposition WRI. [EDIT: Arrived EWR ~2145L]
Jordan - VQ-BNZ - G650. Arrived JFK, arrived 2230L. Will turn and burn, filed out to ISP. [ADDED/EDIT]
Longtail/LGT1 - VP-BOP - BBJ. Over Maine [2210L]. Arrived JFK 2300L, filed out to ISP. This went to DC during the Africa summit, so it might be carrying a delegation. [ADDED/EDIT]

It's got titles and colors... Well done and worth getting I'd say. It suffers only in the context of its predecessor, as many of the VIP aircraft do. But anyway, your proactive approach pays off once again.... This could be a good year for your collection after all.....

Great Shots Luke! Regarding the other matter, I used to assume that only the very best pilots in any given country would be entrusted to fly around the respective Head-of-State. But 10+ years of watching this, and I am now more inclined to believe nepotism or similar is at play in some cases.... :)

Nice shots Luke, I guess Ill post my shot of the Day I ended up photography the BRU from 4 different angles. Even got some video ill post if if its worth it. The last time I had a chance to get a shot a Belarus T154 was in 2003 when it flew form Europe to Boston and then it Cuba (Airline colors). It never made the return trip.

The BRU could possibly be my shot of the year. I didn't think I'd have another chance to shoot a T154 again. The Air China was also a nice catch.

WOW!!!!......... Belarus could have sent their 767 and they arrive on a TU-154. Splendid looking machine but then again an all-white Tu-154 would still be more attractive than any modern Boeing or Airbus. If I were up there id' been out in rain and hurricane winds just to see it. The new Turkish VIP A330 looks darned good too for a VIP transport livery. I agree that Niger BBJ's livery is such a disaster I would not miss anything if i never photographed that airplane. Their 732 in the classic livery on the other hand is beautiful. That newer Zimbabwe scheme is another visual disaster. Ok rant over don't want to spoil the happiness.

How's spotting for the 4's at Inwood?

Not everyone likes Inwood Park because you are further away from the planes, but I like it better than Bayswater as I have 500mm on a crop sensor to play with. It's also much easier to stay ahead of runway changes as opposed to the extra distance to Bayswater and the shots are more side-on

Iran looks to be bringing a Mahan 343, EP-MMC. About to go feet dry just S of Boston; ETA around 1640L. [EDIT: Mahan now on final 31R, 1627L]

Mali BBJ P4-PRM arrived JFK around 2200L.
BBJ HZ-HR5 opf Lebanon arrived EWR earlier in the afternoon and has repositioned to McGuire.
The Ceiba 772 CS-TQX, which brought the other half of the Equatorial Guinea delegation to EWR is on its way to Boston now.
Venezuela F900 YV2485 on final to JFK 2320L. Venezuelan F50 YV2165 is just behind him. And just behind him is Conviasa E190 YV3016!
Philippines 343 RP-C3435 arrived EWR earlier this afternoon and is now repositioning to DOV.

Presidential flotilla just landed at Wall Street. Usual 2x MV-22, 2x VH-3, with the third Osprey circling overhead and not landing. Landing Ospreys were code 04 and 06; don't have the time to go and see about the Sea Kings.

As a relative new member and spotter it was really nice to receive such a warm welcome from Manny and some of the other folks taking pics today.

Senga, wow, as always, you kill it with the rare ones. Are the planes at SWF parked in a way that are not too tight? Always wonder if it is worth it to go up only to find out they are not cleanly photographable (is that even a word? )

Manny,
Yea they seem to crowd the planes close together. They has several smashed against walls now and in the corners. They have been parking the planes a little different starting from last year so there is a little more randomness how they are parked and they are not lines up nicely like they used to be. Usually I only bother with what I need and you find most of the stuff there yo already got at JFK. They only plane that was there when I arrived that I need was the Irqai 737. I got a crap shot but at least I got it that's why I go. I'll get it when it goes back to JFK so will have to try again later when it come back to JFK.

A few quick edits from SWF yesterday afternoon. Unfortunately, an area that was wide open last year right next to the fuel farm is now gated off. So there isn't much that has an unobstructed view now.

Spanish Air Force A310 and Falcon 900 were parked right next to each other at the entrance to the terminal area:
https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3882/15318649986_9092b40320_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/pkE5WW)
https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3894/15318650256_396256a458_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/pkE62A)

Also parked back there was Royal Air Maroc (CN-RNT, obstructed view), and this Libyan Falcon 900 (Thanks Mateo!):
https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3912/15318744456_5fa9123f4f_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/pkEz2J)

Morocco also brought a C-130, parked on the other side of the passenger terminal:
https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3845/15318649486_f4ee250ab1_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/pkE5Nj)

Next to the C-130 was the South African 727 charter. The Congo 707, Iraq 737, and Chad 777 were all parked in that area with obstructed views:
https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3904/15154919689_d818e2b79d_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/p6bVCM)

The Belarus TU-154M was sitting just inside one of the gates to the GA ramp. Many thanks to the security guard who had no problems with me taking a picture.
https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2942/15154980480_e0e915c4e8_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/p6ceGU)

The Gambia IL-62 was over there too, behind a couple NYSP helicopters:
https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2944/15341779145_32ef6e3734_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/pnGCrx)

Finally, you never know what's going to show up at SWF at any given time. I always have the scanner on when I'm there, so when I heard "<weird callsign, sounded like "Kuwaiti"> heavy, cleared for the option," i stopped what I was doing and made a beeline for a shot of the runway. At first I thought it was the State of Kuwait A340-500 that parked up there last year, but it was much better than that:
https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3887/15155146557_9c4423a3b6_z.jpg (https://flic.kr/p/p6d65i)

The Iraqi 77L was pretty visible but with lots of obstructions. The UAE 787 is parked right behind the Atlantic Aviation building, only the nose was visible. Niger was right next to it, out in the open but behind a tank. Several other BBJs were parked back by the fuel farm, but completely obstructed.

JFK using 13L now approach. Saw a few interesting sights from my house. PIA 2 about 1220, and what looked like a USAF military a few minutes before and several others of interest. Had no binoculars and Flight Aware doesn't show military. Aircraft all backlit. Got the A388s': SIA, KAL and UAE as well.

Yea its ICAO/IATA FTTJ/NDJ I would think the flight originated somewhere in Chad. I don't know where though. They have a VIP MD-87 that came to the UNGA a few years back but hasn't been back since.

Back at home at last...

Had a great time spotting around JFK with all the local (and not so local) photographers. My score for the UN traffic was quite good, while I missed some good ones due to being ill placed or too late for it. Nevermind, maybe next year. Being my first ever visit to JFK, regular traffic was also of interest and I managed to get quite decent photos on this subjects too.

My personal highlights:

Yeah i was wondering also!!

I responded to Speedbird1 privately, but since it seems like several people want to know...

I have never been hassled at SWF, even when I have parked myself on the side of the road for several hours waiting on a departure. Lots of locals come out to watch the planes up there, and if I run into one, I always chat them up. Usually they learn something and it makes them less suspicious of me. The airport is far less militarized now than it used to be, so MP's aren't really a concern as long as you stay away from the ANGB area. I actually feel more comfortable spotting on-property there than I do spotting from the few off-airport spots there are.
For that TU-154 shot, I felt it was best to approach the guard in the shack instead of just walking up to the gate and grabbing my shots. He was totally cool with it.

In terms of being hassled, Saturday morning was rough. After that, things seemed to settle down.

To add on to what Ben shared.
I have been shooting SWF since 2002. Its actually the airport I enjoy visiting the most in the area. I have flown myself in there many times and also have shot there countless times over the years. Its small airport with a laid back relatively low level of hostility and aggression towards people watching/ photographing planes. SWF is a fun airport to shoot at.

My general "Mantra" carries over. Don't make a spectacle out of ones self, for an out-of-towner behave accordingly, respect Police AND Security (Most importantly yourself). Please consider a few of us (I think) have been shooting there for many years well before and will even after while others come and go.

Senga saw the F-28 here once in the mid 1990's or so not able to get a photo. The 767 has been here once or twice and I think this was my third or 4th time seeing the BBJ including 1 arrival right in the middle of Kids Day a few years ago.

Totally agree. That one time I was stopped was because I was taking pics through the fence by the south end where at that time they had a hangar for the evac copters!! That was back in the 90s.
I loved sitting up on the road that parallels the runways and watching the aircraft, especially the C-5s, land and depart!!

Colombia always uses LGA for some reason. From looking at the trackers, an A332 (probably Turkey) departed JFK this morning, and the Ceiba 772L just departed EWR (1200L), but it looks to be heading south. It's a semi-frequent IAD visitor, so one to watch. [EDIT: Nope, not IAD - FL360 over Delaware. Wouldn't be surprised if this one wound up in either MIA or HAV]

Slovakian Tu154 departed JFK 31L just after 1800

One of them is likely the Falcon 900 D2-ANT that was kicking around at SWF last weekend. They also have Global D2-ANG, but I think that's the flagship of the government fleet, and would presumably get the 1 call, but those are the two most likely candidates.

[EDIT: FR24 shows a Global arriving around 1100 from SWF, so -ANG perhaps? Don't see any sign of the other one.]

Thanks for posting this Slovakian TU-154. I saw it on approach over Coney beach on Sunday and thought it was an IL-62. It did not appear on Flight Aware. ELY B762 was flight 37 from TLV and arrived Rwy 22L. It later departed for CYYZ yesterday evening. I think it was indeed UN-related as it doesn't appear to be a regularly scheduled flight although the flight shows on Flight Aware which usually hides diplomatic and military flights, I believe.

Since we are now posting video, I need to do my part to keep this thread going.

Cary knows what the word "Epic" means, because he was shooting stills destined for anet while I filmed this a few feet from him:

Don't forget that dudes got that day some UN planes in that weather conditions...

Mateo...you wanted to see "dudes" pointing their lenses to the sky/planes?

Sorry, I didn't video Fasil dancing after Belarus TU154 passed by... :) :)

So as to add something worthwhile to this thread; I did a quick check of the Liveatc tape from this morning:
Angola 2 is the Global and it came from SWF, so it's almost certainly D2-ANG.
D2-ANT (the Falcon) checked in about 5 minutes later. It used its reg as the callsign in the air, but then Angola 3 on the ground.

Thank u very much Mateo for the info on Gambia, he did the same last year for departure but this year arrived on daylight and everyone got a shot. From this thread i gather this year's VIP arrivals looked unusually concentrated, with most good stuff in two days except Belarus mid-week (which actually came in for the "Climate Summit" not the General Debate). I notice UN airplane paintschemes are getting progressively worse though, too many thin wavy lines like in some A319s, Niger BBJ, even Iraqi Airways new look is zzzzz.. or some bizarre ugly paint like on Lybian 5A-ONE last year, or even worse - military gray like that Peruvian 737 :frown:

Now, that Tupolev video was beautiful! Replayed it at least 5 times in a row, never thought I'd see it on video. Real machine with sound and smoke, hard to believe it's still around since i first got her on film some 10 years back. I don't shoot video, but wonder if a still in HD can make a good photo? (not talking about for sending it to buttkissers.net). I mean simply to get a pleasant image to look at

edit: nothing for us down here as far as VIPs going to Miami or Disney which can happen on occasion

Great shot Mark, that new superzoom is killing it for you!!

Here are mine, finally. Just a few of my favorites. I had a great time with everyone, it was a blast shuttling people back and forth between Panera and Inwood, even if Gintaras almost killed me, Jared, Steve, and Ryan once on the way to catch Egypt.

All taken with Canon 5DMkIII + Sigma 120-300 f/2.8 + Sigma 1.4xTC. Forgive the quality, they're from Photobucket.

I did spend a few hours at the airport today and was very happy with the few aircraft I captured!
Great shots! Especially the shot of the UAE 788 and DRC 707 taken near sunset on your photostream.

EPIC VIDEO!!! Great angle, that must have sounded great in person!!

Angola 2 is the Global and it came from SWF, so it's almost certainly D2-ANG.
"Angola Two" this year was 9H-VJE (http://planefinder.net/flight/ANGOLA2/time/2014-09-22T18:56:30%20UTC/speed/1), a VistaJet GLEX.
It headed to SWF Tuesday (9/22) evening as VJT859L (http://flightaware.com/live/flight/9HVJE). Too bad though, it would have been nice to finally catch an Angola Government aircraft...

That's where I have to stop; I do wish Iraq Airways kept more green on the fuselage but I'm in love with the tail! As for 5A-ONE, she's definitely different but she sure is eye-catching!
Also the Belarus TU-154 initially arrived on Sunday 9/21 as BRU2003 (MSQ-KEF-JFK).

I think, you can get a pretty good still from video. Depends of camcorder and your perception of "pleasant" image.
I got some "pleasant" still's from my cheapo($200) Panasonic HD camera...

And I like your definition - buttkissers.net - great !!!
