View Full Version : Blue Angels Flyby Friday

Landing Lights
2013-12-11, 11:09 PM
Per ZNY, 7 Blue Angels aircraft will depart TEB at 1:00-1:15 pm on Friday and fly up to the Tappan Zee Bridge. From there, they will do 3 passes along the Hudson (south, north, and then back south again) at 1000 feet and 280 knots. The purpose of the flights is to photograph the Blue Angels with the WTC in the background. It will be 6 of the Blue Angels in a delta formation with the 7th taking photos.

Tip of the hat to NYCA Contributing Editor Gabe Andino for bringing this to my attention.

Ben, thanks for posting that info because News 12 mentioned the Blue Angels Hudson River flyover tonight also.
BTW, the Blues are scheduled to do a flyover for the Army-Navy game in Philly on Sat. also, weather permitting:confused:

A Pilot friend of mine emailed me that There is a Blue angel at TEB, He heard that the all of Angels will arrive Thursday morning and depart approx. 1445 to do a photo op at the Freedom Tower!

Does that mean a flyby of the Freedom Tower today and another flyby on the Hudson tomorrow or everything is happening today only?

This is what was he heard rumored around th airport not verified officially. Sorry if I caused any confusion.
Btw is it confirmed that all the angels are in yet?

Anyone know of a good vantage point for spotting?
I'm thinking liberty state park? If you went to the WTC planes over Hudson would be backlit I think.

NYC Notify has an official entry... They will fly from Teterboro south then north then south again on the Hudson corridor... 1000 feet

Liberty State Park would be a good spot to get a similar shot to this one from back in 2012,
that Blue Angel #2 just posted on Twitter today::cool:
https://pbs.twimg.com/media/BbOtzw7IEAA1j4O.jpg:large

BTW, on one of the 3 passes you might even want to try and get the "Empty Sky Memorial Walls"
there at LSP in the foreground, with the WTC in the background, as the Blues flyby possibly !!
Good luck !!

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -The U.S. Navy's elite Blue Angels jets will fly along the Hudson River and past Ground Zero Friday afternoon, the city announced.
Seven F/A-18 Hornets will fly in front of One World Trade Center for a photo shoot, according to the Office of Emergency Management. One jet will take photos while six will fly in formation.
The aircraft will take off from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey at about 1:15 p.m. and will make three passes along the river; south, north, and then south again, the city said.
The jets are expected to fly at about 1,000 feet.
The Blue Angels squadron is a flight demonstration team that performs at dozens of air shows and events every year. The team recruits aviators from the Navy and Marine Corps.

The Blue Angels 3 passes looked pretty good on the Jersey City Earth Cam and NY Harbor cam also.
Skies looked perfect and I hope some of you were able to get some good shots of the flybys too:cool:

I was at the marina outside World Financial Center. I thought the Blue Angels would follow FAA rules to fly down the Hudson on the Jersey side, then up the Hudson on the NY side. This would allow me to shoot them with Jersey City skyline in the background. But they flew up and down the Hudson on the NY side, which caused my pictures to be back lit. Anyways, here are 2 photos from me.

Question guys, on my last shot in the set (the one showing more tower). If I were to submit to Anet or JP do you think I should crop in even tighter?
I kinda like that you see more of the tower, but not sure with this one if the motive shot gets lost.

Gerard

BTW, you should send those shots to the Blues Angels PAO also because I think they
might want to use some of your shots for their 2014 Yearbook possibly !!

Amazed (really shouldnt be) of the negative comments I read about this Flyby on a number of Facebook pages where a picture was put up and the comments section of a few newspapers. Oh you get the usual "Waste of fuel and resources" comments but the ones from people writing they were "scared" seeing the pictures, it was "Disrespectful" "it made my heart jump" "the people in the area must have been terrified", "very eerie seeing planes that close", "creepy" made me realize many people still have a heightened sense of dread from that day and probably aviation in general!!

We can thank the media and the 'if you see something say something' campaign for that

Don those shots are killer. I would leave the last one AS IS and let them figure it out for themselves. If it was the same shot with the Red Arrows flying past Big Ben I'm sure it would get accepted

Going to be close!! Flurries and ceiling coming down

Angels AND Apaches both flew!! Not much coverage on CBS though!! They showed a tight shot of the Angels in formation when Navy took the field but didnt even identify them. When Army came out they had another tight shot but they got an ID as Apaches!!

Chris S
2013-12-14, 04:35 PM
Yeah, I was surprised they actually flew because the ceiling was maybe 1000 ft. with light snow !!
Anyway, even though the flyover TV coverage wasn't that good it was still great to see the Apaches
and Blue Angels, aka "Snow Angels" today, were still able to do the flyovers for the Army-Navy game !!
Here's a video of it also:

Don - those shots are superb. Don't do anything to that last image - it is pretty much perfect as is. If A.net decide not to accept it as is, it speaks volumes as to their lack of understanding as to what the true aviation enthusiast wants to see

Cheers

Thanks for posting as I am a big fan of the Angels. It's hard to get to Teterboro without a car and a car in the winter is no bargain. I gave-up the Angels to spot at JFK on my birthday, Friday the 13th and had a ball. Thanks to Phil, nobody bothered me except for a homeless guy. I think he was trying to get my iPhone. At JFK, I saw all the regulars arriving on 31R and I think there was a C-130 Hercules at the cargo area. I was trying to get a retro US Air before the re-painting, but no luck. The AirTrain is now painted in British Airways colors.
