View Full Version : JFK Spotting From Long Beach - Gear Down!

I spent some time Sunday spotting from Long Beach for 31 arrivals. While the traffic is at a bit higher altitude than one would like, fun part is that you can capture the landing gear dropping. Most of my captures are from the Boardwalk looking northeast towards the ZULAB marker (Island Park) for 31R. Also caught a couple of heavies inbound for the left, side but they were partially back lit.

Don, now your just bragging...It's a real shame because I grew up in long beach, too bad I wasn't a spotter when i was 5 :P...but hey, 22L arrivals around 2500-3000ft over your house aren't bad either!

Nice shots. I often wondered what they'd look like on a camera from Long Beach but I was always only there for ice hockey and didn't care to bring the camera as well as 50 pounds of goalie equipment. Very nicely done.

Well, when I lived in Long Beach I could shoot from my terrace and I never really did much. Could be because I was looking at the sights on the beach.

Thanks Kenny. The other times I tried form Long Beach heat haze was a problem. You really need exceptional weather to shoot there, like we had last Sunday. I just added a couple more.

Great shots from a different angle. What is the length of your lens? Did you use 1/1000 shutter speed? Try to stand under the Emirates A388; the belly has the Emirates logo in red. It might be the only airliner with its name down on the underside. Keep posting great photos; very professional !

Awesome shots, Don! I'll have to give Long Beach a try one of these days when there's perfect weather.

Torch, With UN Week coming up, if you're around next weekend the 21st and/or 22nd there will be plenty of us out there.

Funny you should ask... All I can say is, the year I moved to LB the city approved bikini tops optional for women on the beach.

Very cool pictures! The board walk on LBI was the first time I ever spotted at JFK and only about the 3rd or 4th time I ever went spotting period, good memories:

I've definitely learned a lot since then, especially that you can get closer to the approach than 7 miles out!

What mm did you take your pictures at and how much were the original pictures cropped?

Love the pics especially the Etihad 777, very crisp!

It might be the only airliner with its name down on the underside.
Qatar, Air Berlin, Turkish, Virgin Atlantic, Air Asia, PIA and some others also have their name/logo painted on their bellies.

Great shots from a different angle. I spent summers in Long Beach in the 50's bit I was not into spotting back then. What is the length of your lens? Did you use 1/1000 shutter speed? Thanks. I use the standard spotter's choice in Canon. 100-400mm. The only plane I had to really crop in on was that ANA 777. Shows some heat haze as a result. She dropped gear farther out. The Emirates would be a sweet catch from there. Also Air Berlin has a belly logo.

Thanks. Nice Lufthansa. See my reply to Speedbird. LB is awesome for the heavies and again, only when the light is great and there is low heat haze.

Very cool shots Don, it really is pretty cool to see the gear dropping and some different angles!

As for Kenny, the goalie equipment explains a lot haha

Wow, never knew Air Berlin also had an underbelly logo. Any others to look for?

The newest one to look for with an underbelly logo is Aer Lingus - A330 Ei-DAA recently rolled out with Aer Lingus titles and the logo on the belly

Any others to look for?

Jetstar, CityJet, Biman Bangladesh, Cargolux 747-8F, and some prototypes like the 747-8F and A350.

Even though it's not an airliner this one has to be the best!
