My parents got an exclusive invite for an event with the Swiss embassy at the hangar at JFK on the 13th, and I can't make it because I have to be at a wedding! This might be a must-do for me, then!

BTW - had an extra treat today at JFK after visiting the Solar Impulse in Hangar 19. Dreamlifter #N780BA was on the tarmac next door right at the end of West Hangar Rd. and it was pretty cool to see it up close  Hope it's still there for everyone who's going tomorrow also.

See you all there tomorrow. The last time I was inside Hangar 19 was when my cousin was a PAN AM mechanic there many moons ago. I got to walk out on the wing of a 747 going into D-check.

I assume cameras are permitted into the Hangar tomorrow? Haven't heard otherwise.

Great Solar images Mark and Many! I also like how you captured the architectural space that is Hangar 19. Many folks don't realize how many PanAm 747s passed through those four walls. It's like hallowed ground. Especially now that we're about to lose what's left of the PA Worldport.

In your photos you can still see the long notched roof designed to accommodate the upper deck and tail sections. That whole space was literally transformed with extensive scaffolding each time they'd roll in a 74- for D-check (complete overhaul). I was lucky enough to visit the joint as a teen. Unfortunately, I had to cancel my trip to Solar Impulse on Sunday for family matters. Thanks for Solar coverage and Hangar 19 memories.

That thing is still sitting there! I had hoped I would catch it departing while there this week but...this'll do

Nice work William. Did you use any post processing filters like Topaz? Solar Impulse is history and all that, but for me seeing the Dream Lifter would have really lifted my spirits!

megatop412
2013-07-19, 08:47 AM
Thanks Don, no I just use Corel Paint Shop Pro, a little bit of sharpening, saturation, and contrast goes a long way.

I'm surprised the Dreamlifter has been sitting there so long, usually both of them are routinely busy. You could probably catch it at least on the ground if you go down there

Aviation.High.Guy
2013-07-19, 09:10 AM
Thanks. I may just head over there this afternoon. Is the spot you shot Dream Lifter from accessible, or can you only get to through the exhibit?

megatop412
2013-07-19, 11:06 AM
It is accessible, but the lot I was in I was only in for a minute. It's right before a ramp checkpoint. To my right were lot employees standing around a car chatting and to my left, there was a field access gate with an attendant that was conducting under-vehicle bomb checks on trucks entering the ramp. So I would drive in, run up to the fence, grab the shot and vamoose if I were you. Plus, you'll end up with the fence links in your photo as a wide angle lens is required and the front element of those things has a larger diameter than what the fence will accommodate.

Not sure when the thing will go out, but like I said its been sitting there for a while. Hope you don't end up driving down there in this heat to find its departed. Check flightaware:

A month too late, but I am curious about the cost of tickets to see Solar Impulse at Hangar 19. What happened to the aircraft after the exhibit?

PhilDernerJr
2013-08-14, 09:55 AM
It was free. The aircraft is gone now. Not sure where they put it. Probably took it apart and flew the pieces to Europe.

FYI -It was transported back home to Switzerland on August 5th on a Cargolux 747 and it landed at Dübendorf airfield there.

To add to what Chris said, it has been put into storage in Switzerland for now. In the future it may see a life as a museum exhibit, but nothing has been determined yet. The bigger priority at this point is getting HB-SIB into the air next year.
