Great day out (with the exception of one tragic event). Nice to see everyone and I hope we can do it again soon/

Nice shots and video of the Solar Impulse landing. BTW, after Solar Impulse landed did they say why they weren't allowed to have ALL of their LED lights on the front edge of the wing turned on ?? Sounded like the Tower made that call and it was definitely disappointing not to see the whole wingspan of SI lit up as usual when I saw it on it's SHORT approach on 22L last night !!:frown:

They're all awesome Jason, hard to pick a favorite, but that AA T7 looks amazing with that light and angle.

My favorite is the Kuwaiti Boeing 747-400/Q .. even better looking than the old NCA Freighter ...

Not totally sure why, but I will try to find out.

My takeaway from the livestream at about 9:30 last night was that it was a call made by the Solar Impulse team not to have what they termed the "promotional lights" on. It did not sound to me at the time as if this was something that ATC was requesting. There could have been a behind-the-scenes request from ATC or the FAA, but it wasn't presented to the pilot as "the tower says only your landing lights can be on. It is possible that given the technical problem that they had that they did not want to risk drawing additional attention to the aircraft and scare the general public. Also, those lights may have potentially illuminated the dangling fabric making it obvious to the public that there was a "broken plane" flying overhead.

My Solar Impulse shots from The Mounds. Probably the most challenging aircraft I have ever shot in the year that I have been spotting. Needed high (6400) ISO, large aperture, slow shutter speeds, a tripod and a lot of luck. The vast majority of what I took were obvious throwaways but I did come away with 5 that I found to be at least acceptable.

Our first sight of the aircraft before the landing lights had been turned on.

As they started the turn from downwind to final thy flipped the landing lights on.

Lots of brightening and not enough noise reduction available for this one

Passing at about the closest point that it came to us.

Probably the best shot I got as it caught the light from the cargo facility between the Mounds and Rockaway Blvd.

It is worth noting that pretty much the entire turn from base to final took place in the space between the Mounds and N. Woodmere Park, a distance of roughly a mile.

Ben it was good seeing you out at the mounds last night and thanks for clarifying that you heard that conversation on the livestream from Solar impulse about them making the call NOT to have their "promotional lights" on. I thought the feed was from JFK.

Ouch! Man was that thing far away from you guys.

Well we weren't as close as you were, but it wasn't far. Never more than a mile or so away by my best guess. Those first 2 shots were taken at 18mm so that I could get the widest-open aperture that was possible in my kit. The last 3 were shot at 100mm-190mm again trying to keep the aperture as wide open as possible. We were set up for a normal 22L approach and were caught a bit off guard with the early turn. Hindsight being 20/20, we should have taken them very literally when they said they were avoiding overflight of populated areas.

Just a few from me, on a day that was very promising, but didn't quite pan out the way I'd hoped:

I don't know what you mean, Cary, those shots look pretty good to me. Unless you mean you missed certain specific a/c, which I could never relate to

Thanks...yeah, so there were 6 things I went out there to get:

1) Qantas Boxing Kangaroo (50% chance) - it was the other plane (regular colors)
2) LOT 787 - no sun from my angle
3) ANA Star Alliance - went 22R, when I've never seen ANA go 22R
4) Kuwait 747-400 - FlightAware/Plane Finder/etc. error
5) Habitat for Humanity (yeah, I still need a better shot of that) - ACARS error
6) Iberia Longest Tweet - no sun from my angle...the sun hit it right at the spot where a tree blocked my shot

So yeah, 0 for 6. That's just being cursed

1) Bad ADS-B data???
2& 6) Looking at Jason's photos, there was plenty of sun on the LOT 787 & Iberia A340. Where we you hiding?
3) 22R for ANA? Very strange
4) Kuwait 747 has been a ghost for who knows how long now.
5) I also still need a better shot. Best I have is a low sun angle shot to 31L from Costco

Not cursed...poor strategy.

Nope, Boxing Kangaroo was QFA107 going into LAX...it's normally a tossup between the two 747s, on which one continues to JFK. So, I knew that one wasn't for sure, but it would have been nice.

Ha, I was on the right side, on the Mounds. I was trying to let another spotter by, who had just walked up, when the LOT was in sun. The Longest Tweet wasn't in sun for any shots I got.

The Kuwait had the actual registration of the 747-400 on FlightAware and Plane Finder (in fact, it still shows: http://flightaware.com/live/flight/9KADE - although they fixed the aircraft type).

Even if Habitat came, it would have been the other side...that one is pretty much a guarantee to go to 22R or 31L.
