Well I'm not quite certain if this should go under Spotting as I do have more ships/boats than planes in here but I have a good excuse I promise!

I was part of a team surveying two of Boston's high speed ferries that run to, among other destinations, Logan International. Upon realizing that, I knew I had to make the most of this chance to spot from an area most people don't have repeated access to... provided I was done checking the engines and waterjets by the time we were passing the thresholds.

On top of the planes, I got a decent chance to shoot whatever was in/around the harbor with an eye on, well, everything that moved with engine power.

This was my first chance to try out my new D7100, though mother nature was her typical uncooperative self, it sure beat not getting shots at all.

Thanks for looking, let me know what ya think!
In theory I'll have more jet pictures up soon, but I had to get through editing the survey specific shots first which killed my personal processing time.
POST 200!
That is all.

That's a nice opportunity you had. Pics look as good as they're probably going to get in those conditions, you might get sharper images by upping the ISO so you can increase the shutter speed. Nice catch on the Japanese Dreamliner!

Thanks for the kind words!
I'll definitely be bumping up the ISO next time. I was still mentally in Maxxum 7D mode thinking I needed to keep it below 400 to have anything usable and having a few mild cases of frustration when it came to fixing a few setting on the fly. I might also be lens sharpness limited more than shutter speed/hand hold technique limited, and the vibrations on the vessel certainly weren't helping anything.

I'm still very pleased with the purchase, and I'll have all the Nikon quirks figured out soon enough.

Everything I've read about the 7100 indicates that body does real well with the higher ISO's, as long as you're not trying to upload shots to the major databases you should end up with a tolerable amount of noise

Yeah, I had read the same, in the heat of the moment that did escape me, new toy syndrome I guess haha.

I did go back and check the EXIF, at 250mm my shutter speeds were all about 1/500th or better for the jet shots plus I had OS on, so I don't think I could have done much by bumping up the ISO, but with the deck vibration it still could have hurt to try.

Thanks for the ideas Will!
